So, I have a vampire mare, most of you know that ;D
This is just some info about general vampire horses, taken from 'The book of wierd and Wonderful creatures.'
Diet
Obviously, they drink blood, and cannot survive for longer than a year on grass, as it makes them very ill, so most vapmire horses avoid grass. They cannot drink water, it is of no nutritional value to them. If they bite an animal that is not an equine, it won't turn into an immortal, the venom will simply spread, leaving the creature in immense pain until it dies. If enough blood is drained from an equine, they won't change immortal, they will die.
Changing
To change another into a vampire, the immortal must transfer enough venom into the bloodstream, without draning too much blood. Not enough venom, and the mortal will die, too much, and they will die. Of course, as mentioned before, it is only equines that can be transformed into immortals. The actual process is extrodinarily painful, and most will beg for death just to escape it. The pain lasts for a few days, until the transformation is complete.
Breeding
Vampires can breed with mortals, it isn't dangerous if the immortal is the mare, as they have no way to bite the stallion, but as stallions will often hold on to the mare's withers with their teeth, they must be very careful when they breed. To be able to breed, a complicated process must be followed, in wich the immortal will take a small amount of blood from the mortal, transfering some of the venom to the mortal. The pair will become firmly attached then, feeling eachother's pain, and being linked in a way two mortals cannot hope for. After this, they are free to breed with eacother, though breeding can occur before this, the mating will be dangerous for both equines. Once pregnancy occurs, wich is rather often as vampires are very fertile, the mare -if immortal- will go through the normal stages of pregnancy, suffering immense cravings of equine blood, the thirst can drive some immortal mares mad if their thirst is not satiated. Birth is a dangerous time, immortals, as a general rule, aren't used to pain, and will recoil from it instinctivley. It is normal for the male to keep a distance from the female, as she can lash out. When the foal is born, they are usually on their feet sooner than normal foals, simply becuase if they arn't, their mother's could harm them until they calm down. After this, the mare will prduce milk as a normal equine, though the foal will be able to survive on blood from birth. They will grow until maturity, becoming immortal when they're matured.
