Basic History: Ancient art of these horses has been found all over the world. The found it in Ancient Persia, Ancient Greece, The T'ang Dynasty of China, and 11th century France. In the 18th century, these horses were in high demand by royalty and nobility. Conquistadors first brought the spotted horses to the Americas in the 16th century. More were brought in when spotted horses went out of style in the late 18th century of Europe. The Nez Perce American Indians first obtained horses in 1700. They established breeding herds and used the perfect landscape to keep horses to their advantage. They were known as notable horse breeders by the 19th century. Both Lewis and Clark agreed that these spotted horses were of good quality. After the Nez Perce War, the American Indians lost their Appaloosas and were forced to go to a reservation. Finally, they began to expand the breed they called "Palouse horses". Eventually, they started calling them "Apalouse," and finally "Appaloosa".
Habitat: In the Americas, Appaloosas lived in the rocky state of Washington with the Indians. They have good feet, and they could easily live on a mountain or valley.
Quick Facts: Appaloosas were used as coach horses by Louis XIV. From the year of 1938 to 2007, 670,000 Appaloosas have been registered. There are many different kinds of Appaloosas, including, Snowcap, Blanket and Spots, Leopard, Few Spot Leopard, Snowflake, Varnish Roan, Mottled, Roan Blanket, and Roan Blanket with spots.
