Prologue – Chosen
“Whew I can't believe that's finally over," a young African American girl said as she walked wither her friends out of a classroom at Kawana Waters State College. She was not really African American, only her parents implied that about her. "I bet you're wondering how school would have been for you back where you were born, eh, Jenny?" the slender golden blond girl said. Jenny grinned, shifting her long black hair out of her face, "Definitely. What do you guys want to do now school's out for the day?" "Why don't we go back to your place to study for a while then head late night shopping?" Angeline Abercrombie asked. Her lengthy golden blond hair whipped into her face, the few strands that were out of the long plait she had that reached halfway down her back. All three girls laughed as they walked to the car park to pile into Jenny's Suzuki Swift for her to drive them home. "Wouldn't it be cool to leave that school behind," the third girl said, as the school was left around the corner. "Only if we had a good job, Ashleigh," Jenny laughed. They all laughed at that. It was so good to get out of school each day and graduation was only three weeks away. School was practically over and that meant that soon they would be on their own, freed from the stresses of school. That would certainly be a relief. “Can’t believe school’s almost over,” Angeline said. “Feels like the year just started to me.” “That is so true,” Jenny said, laughed. “It was only thirty weeks ago.” “You still remember when we started the year?” Ashleigh asked, incredulous. “If you were as bright as me you’d remember too. Who you girls going to graduation with?” Jenny asked. “I’m going with John, of course,” Ashleigh laughed. That was met from bother her friends, they had expected nothing else from her. “What about you two? Surely you both have someone,” she added. “Unfortunately, no,” Angeline and Jenny replied at once. “No one seems interested in us.” We chatted for a while talking about different guys and then Angeline popped the question, “Hey do you guys reckon those Hunters of the Night boys are hott?” Jennifer of course, was in a tricky situation with that question. She was half Warden of the Dark, which was a pain at times. “I don’t know. I have not actually met any, though I have meant a lot of hott Dark Warden guys.” “”Fore real?” both her friends asked in disgust. “The demon’s are hotter than those fangs.” “Okay guys, say what you want about vampyres but not mean stuff in my car okay?” “What’s it to you anyway, Jen?” Ashleigh asked. “My mom’s a vampyre….” That definitely made the inside of the car deadly silent. “What?” “You’re half one of those bloodsuckers?” Ashleigh demanded, a little angry. “One of those bullying monsters?” Angeline said, her voice showing the same thoughts about Jenny’s mother’s kind. Jennifer groaned. “Guys, they’re not that bad. None of them have ever tried to hurt me,” she protested. “That may seem true to you, but we’ve never heard anything good about them,” Ashleigh reminded her. “I know you haven’t but I have heard both good and bad. Back in America, the Dark Wardens are the most respected guardians there are,” Jennifer told her friends. “I’ve been raised to respect them, my mother is the best Night Warden in Queensland.” “Anyone can become one of them, who cares if she’s the best,” her friends laughed uncaringly. Jenny pulled over to the side of the road. “I’m not going to drive another meter girls. You’ve really offended me.” “We’ve said stuff like that before and you have not been offended,” Ashleigh said. “That was before I knew what my mother happens to be,” Jennifer declared. “She told me the day after my last birthday.” “No wonder you’re always top of the class,” Angeline said. “Thy’re meant to be exceptionally smart.” “I also study a lot,” Jenny laughed. “That easily has something to do with it.” “Okay we’re sorry for what we said about vampyres,” Ashliegh told her. “Now can we start moving again?” “I guess so,” Jennifer laughed. they were not that far from her house as it was anyway. “jJust don’t insult vampyres again.” “The car moved off again and only minutes passed before Jenny turned off the road into a very short driveway. She stopped the care, got out and opened the gate, drove through and sht the gate. In front of the car, the driveway split in two. She drove down the longer driveway around the house, pulling up outside the converted second garage that now acted as a stable. As the girls got out, each was greeted by a different neigh. Three horses head appeared over the stall doors. One was bay, one was black and the other was chestnut. “Naraya,” Jenny laughed, slipping over to the middle stall and patting the chestnut Morgan stallion’s head happily. She loved the beautiful Morgan and hoped to compete with him in the 2010 Olympics. Though this was a rather far-fetched idea, she was sure that it was accomplishable. “Adrenna,” Ashliegh laughed, moving straight over to the black ex-racehorse Thoroughbred mare that she owned and loved so much. Such a pleasure to ride, the mare was. “Ohdelia,” Angeline laughed as her bay Andalusian stallion licked her on the cheek. Jenny grinned mischievously. “Why don’t we give them a little bit of exercise?” they could take the horses out into the twenty meter by ten meter arena in the back yard. “Sounds cool,” Ashleigh laughed, slipping into her mares stall. “Yeah Ohdelia and I need to practice jumping,” Angeline agreed. A race then followed to see who could get to the arena first. Adrenna and Ashleigh somehow won. “Thought you girls might be coming out here,” Jenny’s dad called, moving out of the ring. “Hey daddy,” Jennifer laughed. “What are you doing home so early?” “My boss did not need me. so I came home,” the dark skinned African American police officer replied. It was his dark skin that Jennifer had inherited. Jenny laughed, usually her mother set the arena. But today her mother was away in America, on her way back home. About now she would be starting the flight home across the ocean. Not by plane but by her own golden wing. “Isn’t that the fifth time you’ve been sent home early this week?” “Hey if they don’t need me there, it does not worry me. I don’t know how long it will be before you get chosen by that Night Warden school to become like your mother,” he said, serious now. “Not all teenagers your age get chosen you know.” I looked at the ground, clearly embarrassed. “Dad, not in front of my friends, please.” He chuckled and then left. “Crazy dad,” Jennifer muttered, springing into her saddle. For a little while we started to ride together, Naraya and I were constantly the unbeaten pair when it came to jumping. Though it was obvious that the Thoroughbred had greater speed, she sometimes shyed at the jumps whereas my study Morgan never did. The girls were all hot and sweaty when they finished their little mock competition and had a water fight, hosing down the horses. By the time they were all finished and drenched, since somehow Naraya had stolen Jennifer’s hose, they were all pretty cool. While this was going on there was certainly a lot of laughing between them. Especially trying to take the hose back off of Naraya who kept moving his head out of the way so that they could not. “Lets get inside and changed,” Ashleigh laughed, standing in the sun while her friends finished putting their horses away. “Good idea,” jenny laughed. The three girls ran to the house, their clothes drying somewhat, though not completely, and then walked carefully into Jenny’s room. They’d been sleeping over at Jenny’s as it was. That was a good thing because Ashleigh and Angeline really were not looking forwards to explaioning why their clothes were wet. Once they were changed into some clean, dry clothing, Jenny said, “Well, I think we should chuck our wet stuff in the dryer.” The other two laughed, certainly agreeing. Though Jenny was not the oldest, she was the most logical of their trio. Quickly they all moved through the house to the laundry and Jenny bundled the wet clothing into the drier. A few hours passed as the girls studied for a while. That was a very quiet time, except for Angeline and Ashleigh occasionally asking Jennifer for her. She was almost like a school teacher in the way she answered questions. “What’s this word mean?” Ashleigh asked. She pointed to the word ligament. “Ligament: a short band of tough flexible fibrous tissue binding bones together.” At the confused look she got she clarified, “in small words, the stuff holding our bones together.’ Both her friends groaned at her words. They were sometimes easily annoyed by her excessive use of vocabulary. Jennifer simply sighed. “If you two actually studied a bit harder instead of asking me all the time, you would know that.” A few more hours passed and then the girls freshened up to go to late night. Jennifer’s dad drove them, he would happily come and get them afterwards too if they wanted. Hours passed at Kawana Waters Shopping Center easily. Jennifer brought a new book on show jumping, dinner for the girls at her regular work place, Kentucky Fried Chicken or KFC, and several new pairs of pants. She also brought herself a new journal, she said she needed one. Angeline managed to buy herself the latest edition of Horsewyse magazine though the price was going up and that was starting to get annoying. Ashliegh settled with the Twilight Movie and the soundtrack that accompanied it. Quite an interesting thing for her to buy. Though she did not approve of real vampires, she was insanely in love with Edward Cullen. Then again, all three girls were, though Angeline leaned a bit closer towards werewolf Jacob Black. They decided to call Jenny’s dad and let him know that they would catch the bus home. He agreed and they sat at the bus stop argueing as always over the movie that Ashleigh bought. “I still reckon that Jacob’s hotter than Edward. He’s not such an overprotective guy around Bella. Edward does not give her a chance to breathe and do things herself,” Angeline said. “I’d never be able to put up with that.” Jennifer laughed, “No that’s only because Bella’s accident prone that he comes off that way.” “Plus Robert Pattison is so much hotter than Taylor Lautner,” Ashleigh added. Of course Angeline groaned at the very thought of that. Angeline and Ashleigh continued to argue about the two boys. Meanwhile a movement in the shadows nearby had caught Jenny’s attention. She hoped it was not what she thought. “Uh guys can we move into a more well lit place? There’s something in the shadows nearby watching us,” she said. That made her two friends shut up. They both looked where Jenny’s eyes were locked on the dull eyes of one of the three creatures of the night. “I can’t see anything,” Ashleigh muttered. “Neither can I, Jenny,” Angeline muttered. It was then that the creature, actually a human appeared out of the shadows. Well actually two of them. They seemed human except from the fact their eyes were an unnatural black and shaped more like some animal’s. Jenny’s eyes widened in fear. She knew what they were and she instantly flicked her attention to the sky, searching for one of the black winged Night Wardens. As she did, the two creatures leapt at her friends.

Just as both girls shrieked in pain, something winged soared down and moved over towards the two creatures. “Get away from those girls, monsters.” The violet eyed winged creature’s words did the trick. Both monsters leapt up from their chosen to be marked girls and turned on the creature. “We wasn’t going to kill them,” one growled, looking at his companion. “Nope, we was sent to mark them,” the other hissed. “Marking the or not, you were utterly rude about it.” Our winged friend turned to look at Jennifer, the one who still was a human in part at least. She smiled and moved slowly over towards Jennifer. “Its time for you to come out of hiding, Jennifer. Become a Warden of the Darkness as you were born to be.” She kept moving towards the human. Her wings were a deep chocolate color like her curly hair. As she walked, they slowly retreated into nonexistence. They were hidden by a normal human’s shoulder blades. This seemed extremely odd to Angeline and Ashleigh because they had never seen a vampyre before. However Jennifer was completely unnerved by it, her mother had done the same once. Jennifer nodded. “Go ahead.” She’d known that this would happen sooner or later and she had been waiting for it. The vampyre pounced, gently biting into the girl’s neck and then retreating. The strange vampyre then turned her attention to the other two creatures. “Get going before I kill you both.” They needed no second telling and bolted one changing into a huge wolf and he left. Jenny dropped down to look at her two friends who were just recovering from the attack. Both of them moved back away from her at her touch. “What’s wrong with you two? It’s just me,” she said. “Your best friend, Jenny.” “You smell wrong to be our friend,” Angeline said. Jennifer groaned, looking at the winged vampyre. “Could you give me a hand getting my friends back home, please?” Her friends were really hurting her feelings now. If she could still count them as that? Could she? “Certainly.” She grinned. “What are their phone numbers?” Jenny gave them to her and she called the two girls parents. Jennifer called her father while that was happening. “My dad’s coming to get me now.” She walked a little way from her friends, trying to get some fresh air. In her mind she knew that she would not go back to her friends again, until their were ale to accept that she was turning into a vampyre now. “Is it alright if I hang around a little bit? You don’t want those creatures coming back to molest you, do you?” “Certainly not,” I replied. “We do though,” Ashleigh muttered. That caused both Jennifer and the vampyre to snigger. “Only you were just bitten by them, silly girls,” the vampyre said. “There’s only one problem with this happening, guys,” Jennifer said, a little unhappily. “Yeah? Like what?” “Our friendship might have to cease to exist.” Not that would truly be a good thing, at least not in Jennifer’s mind. Maybe to her friends it was a good thing, but she had no way of telling.

Part One Night Warden School ¡V Jenny¡¦s POV Chapter 1 When my father reached the bus stop, I slipped into the car without a backwards glance at my two friends. They did not say a word as I shut the car¡¦s door. ¡§What happened sweet heart? I thought the bus was meant to bring you home,¡¨ my father asked. ¡§It was going to. Then a demon and werewolf stopped by. I saw them coming but my friends did not believe me that we were being watched.¡¨ ¡§Oh dear, don¡¦t tell me those two lovely young girls were attacked,¡¨ my father groaned. ¡§Yeah they were but a Warden of the Dark soon showed up and stopped them. Apparently the wolf and demon were not going to kill them. Instead they were starting the change that happens to any human who becomes a werewolf or demon.¡¨ ¡§Did any of the three creatures get you?¡¨ ¡§Well, yes. I¡¦m not human any more. The vampyre got me.¡¨ it felt strange to me, letting him know about this. I mean hello, he was a human and I was not any more. At the moment, I was somewhere between never being human again, and changing into a vampyre, the protector of any humans out of their houses at night. My father took in a deep breath of air. He seemed to think about what I had just told him for a short moment before he decided to speak again. Probably worried about the fact I was a huntress now, not prey like him to some. ¡§I¡¦ll give your mother a call once we get home, she will be able to help you more than I can.¡¨ ¡§I know that daddy.¡¨ My thoughts went to my two best friends. How would I ever be able to turn on them as I was supposed to now? It just seemed so hard. Most of the car trip went by in silence as the day I met my friends flashed before my eyes. *** Our new next door neighbors, the Lewis family were coming over with their daughter to meet us. I was very excited to hopefully meet a new friend and this would be cool to meet someone new. We also had new nieghbours, the Abercrombie¡¦s on our other side as well, and they were coming around as well. When the doorbell rang, I ran to answer it, reaching it as my mother did. She opened the door and I got a good look at the little girl now facing me. The girl was about my age, perhaps a year younger and she had shoulder length golden hair. ¡§Your hairs really pretty,¡¨ I said as she came into the house with her parents. She smiled back at me as her parents shifted so that another family could come in as well. Their first daughter to enter might possibly be a year older than me. Unlike the first girl¡¦s wavy golden hair, while the same color, this girls was impossibly straight. She had a brother and another sister too. I felt very left out, my hair was black and short. They both had white skin I had dark skin like my daddy. We all made our way into the living room and the adult sat down. All three of us girls stayed rather close to our mothers. ¡§My names Judy and this is my husband, Aaron,¡¨ Mrs Lewis said. ¡§Oh and our daughter, Ashleigh.¡¨ Ashleigh smiled timidly at me and the other girl. She had very pretty silver grey eyes. ¡§Well, I¡¦m Julia Andrews and this is Frank and my daughter, Jennifer,¡¨ my mother said scooping me up and giving me a hug. The second newcomers then introduced themselves. ¡§Well, I¡¦m John and this is Lucy my wife. Our daughters are Angeline and Louise. Our son is Maxmilian.¡¨ My mother smiled and then said, ¡§Jenny, why don¡¦t you and the others go play in your room?¡¨ she suggested. I nodded and slipped off the couch, looking at the four other children. After a little encouragement they all left the room with me. *** The car pulled into the garage and of course, Naraya¡¦s neigh greeted me. I thought about him. Peace always seemed to come to me when I was with my stallion. It might be a good idea for me to sit in his stall for a few minutes before I went inside. I had a feeling that it would be the best thing to do. ¡§I¡¦ll be inside in a minute, dad.¡¨ I slipped from the car and entered my horses stall. I knew I needed some time to come to grips with the fact my old life was over. Not tpo mention the changes from friends to enemies that Ashleigh and Angeline had suddenly undertaken. ¡§I¡¦ll be in the lounge room,¡¨ I heard my father say as he walked away from me. his footsteps crucnched on the gravel footpath as he walked to the house. I sat down in the fresh straw of Naraya¡¦s stall and my horse moved over to look at me curiously, snorting in my face. I smiled pathetically at him when he did. That seemed his natural greeting whenever I saw him and needed to think. Why was it that he noticed no difference in me? I was slowly starting to change into a vampyre. ¡§Why me, Naraya?¡¨ I said softly. He snorted again watching me as he got himself comfortable for the night. ¡§Naraya I¡¦m not the human you always knew me to be,¡¨ I muttered to him as I fed him some hay from the hay net above my head. He snorted, obviously telling me that I was his owner and nothing else really mattered to him. He would not really care if I had two noses and one leg really. I¡¦d had him since he was a foal, who¡¦s mnother died gving birth to him. My mothers Morgan mare had been the dam. I then heard someone talking in the house and my father¡¦s agreement to something. The stable I was in was too far from the house ofor thhe words to be understandable. Then a car came round the corner, well two did, both with horse trailers attached. I stood and exited the stall as they stopped. Two people got out of each car. One of each being my friends, who were now likely enemies. Seeing that their mothers were with them I smiled and said, ¡§Hi Mrs Lewis, Mrs. Abercrombie.¡¨ I had to work hard to keep my face friendly and devoid of anything which happened earlier, though it was likely that they knew what happened to us all. The two adults smiled and said hello, but my friends did not. That definitely hurt. ¡§Angeline, Ashleigh I¡¦m not the enemy.¡¨ ¡§Yes you are, Jennifer,¡¨ Ashleigh said hollowly, sniffing in my direction but not making eye contact. She made a face and I knew that something smelt wrong to her. That made me annoyed but somehow I managed to hide my fury. My friends never called me Jennifer. That was only the name my mother and father called me when I was in trouble. This was not good for me to hear, my full name used by my friend. ¡§How come you came over?¡¨ I asked Angeline. ¡§To get our stuff, we aren¡¦t coming to this place again,¡¨ Angeline replied, voice hollow and cold. I shuddered. They were both hurting me and neither seemed to care. ¡§Okay well, don¡¦t let me keep you here any longer than needed.¡¨ I gulped. ¡§I¡¦ll see you later sometime.¡¨ This time I let the hurt show in my voice and it craked when I said, sometime. With that I ran towards the house really upset now. I walked into the lounge room, straight to my dad. He took one look at me and opened his arms. I moved straight into them and he sighed. ¡§They were really mean to you, weren¡¦t they?¡¨ ¡§Yes they were,¡¨ I said, trying to control myself. It took me quite a while. I then asked, ¡§How far a way¡¦s mum?¡¨ I really needed to see her again I missed her a lot. ¡§She¡¦ll be home in about fifteen minutes darling. Go get yourself freshened up, it¡¦ll help,¡¨ he said, his voice gentle. I nodded, he was right. Quickly I moved up into my room, and had a shower. I was brushing my hair in my room when I heard her voice, calling up the stairs. ¡§Jenny, I¡¦m home.¡¨ The voice that she had was one that really made me feel that I was safe and loved. I knew she loved me and when I heard her talk to me with that gentle, caring and understanding voice, anything bad in my life at the time seemed to disappear. Not permanently, but at least temporairily. Now that I was completely calm I looked once in the mirror and gasped. There, shining in gold was a beautiful crescent moon. That was a little astonishing; it had not been there before my shower. My chocolate skin must have washed clean to reveal it. I reached up to touch it curiously. I wondered if it felt any different to my normal skin. When I did touch the outline, I noticed that my skin was slightly harder than that of the brown inside and outside the golden outline. Then I smiled and headed downstairs. ¡§We¡¦re in the kitchen, honey,¡¨ my father called. Well I guess he was not really my dad now that this change had happened. Slowly I walked into the kitchen looking at my mother. Her long heart shaped golden wings were just starting to retreat into her back when she spotted me with her mind and turned around to face me. I looked at her face which displayed her wonderful marks that signified she was an adult vampyre and just had to smile. Her marks were the shape of two bunches of ruffled feathers, spreading from her eyebrows to her cheeks. Around them in the space that adult marks covered, which was all of the face except the chin, nose and mouth were many old runes. All of this was in the traditional gold of the vampyre mark. ¡§Oh my goodness, you¡¦re like me now,¡¨ she said, coming over and giving me a hug. ¡§Do your friends know?¡¨ ¡§Yeah they do.¡¨ My voice was cold as I said it. ¡§Both of them freaked.¡¨ I scowled at the memory. ¡§What happened?¡¨ she was alarmed by my sudden mood change. I explained in as few words as needed to tell her what happened earlier in the evening. It was not possible to keep my voice from revealing any emotion at all. Then again why should i? It was best to talk about these things than let them bottle up over a long period of time and then explode at a time that was inconvenient. ¡§Honey, I am sorry about that. It sucks to be on one side of this never-ending skirmishing and have your friends on the opposing side,¡¨ my mother said. ¡§What makes you say that?¡¨ I was curious now. ¡§Well, you remember your aunt Janice? She¡¦s my sister, well not any more because she became a demon. One of the other vampyres told me that the bond between sisters will break if that happens and that she will no longer be friendly towards me. I never have invited her over since,¡¨ my mother explained. ¡§I never really knew her,¡¨ I said, trying to make her feel better. ¡§You never did invite her over any way that much.¡¨ ¡§I wish I had done that more now though, I miss her like crazy and deep down she probably misses me, though she¡¦ll never say anything and neither will I to her,¡¨ my mother said. ¡§So what you¡¦re saying is to not stop thinking about or estrange my friends, though you know they¡¦ll say nothing pleasant to me?¡¨ I asked. ¡§That¡¦s exactly what I am saying, Jenny, I am afraid. I have never forgotten my sister and how much she meant to me in the year it took for me to become what I am today.¡¨ I could tell that she was saddened by the separation and I knew that I could understand the way she felt. My friends and I would in time be the same. I already was. I groaned as I absorbed that information. I was liable not going to see my friends ever again in my life. ¡§I guess we just all have to move on,¡¨ I said. ¡§I¡¦m going to go pack my things. I guess its time that I left to go to my new school.¡¨ ¡§Yes, you go and do that, I have to freshen up and then I¡¦ll take you to school,¡¨ my mother agreed. ¡§I¡¦ll come and get you in about fifteen minutes okay?¡¨ ¡§Sure mum, no problem, I¡¦ll be ready,¡¨ I replied. I grinned at her, she had really explained things to me and I was so grateful she had. I then hurried into my room and shut the door. My room was filled with horsey stuff, some from my friends and the rest from my parents. Grabbing my huge duffel bag from the cupboard, I put it on the bed. Then I moved over to my closet and pulled out my riding clothes and many pairs of jeans. I folded them and stuffed them into my bag. Then in went Kovu, my fifteen year old stuffed kookaburra. I loved him and I swear it was him that kept my dream¡¦s nightmare free. Then I walked over to the desk and opened my laptop to check my emails quickly. There were two new ones, from emails I did not know. Opening the first I read: Jenn, We¡¦re sorry about what we said earlier. Its just 2 hard 2 accept that ur an enemy now, rplease if u want 2 talk 2 us one last time before u go 2 school 2 become a demon and werewolf killer, come on msn. We really are sorry, Ash&Ang. I sighed as I reached the end of the first email. Then I grinned and replied to the email: Girls I know that you wouldn¡¦t do that sort of thing and say nothing about it later. I will miss you both like crazy, I hope you know that. There is a demon at your new school, Janice Thunderstorm, who is my aunt, say hello to her for me and mum. Also tell her that though she never really knew me, she will know my name and one day everyone like you both will dread my approach. Not that you 2 I would ever wound. Nightstorm PS, that will be my name only if the studious teachers at my new school allow it. Yes Nightstorm would be the perfect name for me, if any new friends I made thought it suited me of course. I clicked send and watched as the email disappeared into cyberspace. Then I signed into Msn Messenger. Almost immediately my friends were visible to me. I changed my name to Nightstorm and waited for them to notice me. I almost laughed in relief as I glanced at the clock on my computer screen. It was synced to every other clock in the house. I had ten minutes before mum came in and I left to begin my new life. I only hoped it was enough to talk through the damage that had been done tonight. Though I usually wrote things fully and not used chat language on anything, msn messenger was the one exception. I found the two names: I love Twilight and Schools nearly over yippee and opened both in separate screens. Then I typed: Hi. I love Twilight aka Ashleigh was first to respond. Hey J¡K. how r u? I instantly replied: Pretty good except for the fact I am going 2 miss u. Finally the other screen started flashing as Angeline replied. Jennifer¡K what do u want? Okay so my other best friend did not like me at all because of the fact our races were mortal enemies. Who in their wildest dreams would have thought that? Certainly not a very saddened girl because her best friend hates her because of something that she could not control. That would be totally fair on said girl right? No it was not fair. To Angeline I simply replied, I want 2 explain something 2 u, Ang¡K I hoped she would read that and understand that I was actually pretty upset with the whole I¡¦m a vampyre you¡¦re a werewolf or demon thing. I rarely ever called her Ang. She was meant to be the most sympathetic out of our trio but right now, Ashleigh was. Ashleigh then replied, Me 2 I hate the fact we¡¦re supposed 2 b enemies now. We don¡¦t have 2 b when its just us, I typed quickly. At least she was on my side about this though Angeline was not. That much was starting to become obvious already to me. Then the other screen flickered and I read, soz, don¡¦t have time 2 talk 2 enemies. Angeline logged off of her account straight after saying it. I groaned, then typed to Ashleigh. Angeline hates me now. Nah, she¡¦s 2 embarrased 2 admit she treated u badly earlier like I did, was Ashliegh said. No matter wat they say bout ur kind, I wont believe them. I smiled wishing I felt the same about Angeline and what she was becoming. I don¡¦t think Ang will come 2 her senses. Seems only interested in wat she is now. Want 2 no wat she just said 2 me? Tell me¡K.. This is wat she said word 4 word: soz, don¡¦t have time 2 talk 2 enemies. Aww that¡¦s just sad. We¡¦re meant to be friends, Ashleigh said. I glanced at the time on my laptop. Oh heck, mum would be coming any minute. Soz Ash, but I gtg. Mum¡¦s taking me 2 skool any min¡K¡K C u l8tr. I like ur new name, Nightstorm. Its cool. Cya¡K¡K¡K¡K¡K ƒ¼ Cya and thanks. I sighed, signing off msn sadly. Then I noticed I had a new email. It was from a friend, but not from Angeline. That saddened me. Hopefully she would come around soon. I guess that in time I would forget about her but not yet. This email¡¦s subject was: Morning Penfreind. I grinned as I saw it. It was one of my old school friends from America. I clicked on the email, opening it.. Then I read it. Greetings J from USA, Thought I would email u because I saw u online and then u went offline before I could say hi. I presume ur sleeping when I sent this after all ur on the other side of the globe right? The gang over here really misses u, J. please come visit us soon its been years since we saw each other and u know it. Oh by the way, two months ago my life changed completely. I¡¦m not human any more. Instead I¡¦m a vampyre. How cools that? I love having the ability 2 fly it is so awesome. Have u become any of those three yet? Hope not a demon or werewolf that would stink for us both. Anyway let me know when u are coming over this way and me and the gang will come and see u. This much we can promise. Jacinta Boils I grinned as I finished reading it. Just my luck that she came online the minute I had to get off. So I knew I should probably reply now and scare her. She thought I was asleep, and technically I should be if I were still a normal human. So clicking on Reply, I typed: Hey Jacinta, I just got your email and thought I ought to answer back since I won¡¦t be going to sleep any time soon. It¡¦s great to hear that you¡¦re becoming one of the awe-inspiring Dark Wardens. Fascinating you should inquire if I am, only for the reason that I just got bitten by a vampyre about an hour ago. Not that I have ever been abundantly human. That was always such a deception. Optimistically once I¡¦ve learnt everything there is for me to know about being what I am now, I¡¦ll be able to wing over there and see you by myself. Miss you guys so much, Jen. xxoo With that I sent the email and turned my computer off to pack it away in my bag. Just as I zipped up my bag, my mother came into the room. ¡§Ready to go sweet heart?¡¨ she asked cheerfully, I could tell that she was ecstatic about the fact that I was like her at last. ¡§Of course mother,¡¨ I laughed. ¡§Yu know that I¡¦m more than ready to go. Just one thing?¡¨ ¡§What¡¦s on your mind sweet heart?¡¨ ¡§Can Naraya come to the school?¡¨ ¡§Your classes won¡¦t start until tomorrow. I¡¦ll have him transported over for you once the riding Professor has tested you,¡¨ my mother replied. ¡§Okay then, I¡¦m all set,¡¨ I replied.

Chapter 2 My mother led me through her room and out onto their little patio. Then she went over to the paneling of the fence and pressed something I could not see. There was an almost silent grinding noise and a small ledge emerged from the patio. As it finished, my mother walked over towards me. She then clicked her fingers and a gate opened. It gave us access to the small ledge that was about a meter long. “Come this way dear,” she said, stepping calmly out onto the ledge. “How come I have never seen this before?” I demanded, looking at where I was putting my feet. I so did not want to fall. She turned to smile at me. “Your father and I had to keep this hidden because we did not want the neighbors to know what I am,” my mother replied. “How much have you been hiding from me, mother?” I asked. I was a little shocked that she had been keeping secrets from me. “I’ve never really been fully human you know. I always knew there was something about me that seems to deter other students no matter what. You knew that but you never did want to elucidate why until my last birthday.” I could not keep the accusation from showing in my voice. There was no point really. “Well there has always been a chance that you would not become like me you see. I did not want to place a burden on you that might not actually ever affect you. When you became old enough though that you might be chosen I had to tell you because people will know that you are my daughter even if you do change your name,” my mother explained. A little annoyed though I could see the sense in what she was telling me, I replied, “I would have liked to know anyway. you did not have to have to secrete the detail that you are not human from me. After all I am your daughter. Even if I knew that before you told me only months ago I would have still treasured you as much as always.” “I am sorry dear, but it just was not something that a child needs to know. I would have told you but your father convinced me not to,” my mother replied. ”now shall we get going?” I nodded after thinking about it for a little while. It was best I got to school I supposed, since I have no idea what was going to happen to me now that I was on the way to becoming one of the Night Wardens. My mother had me stand in front of her and completely relax. She then hooked her arms around me, and then I was aware of something appearing as she did. I felt her shoulders click out of their normal position as whatever it was appeared. Glancing back at her, I saw her two big golden wings appearing and spreading out in to the shape of eagles wings. I grinned and then took my bag and got a very secure hold on it when she said, “Let’s take to the air.” As soon as we were in the air I stared down completely amazed by how different this all was to being in an airplane. “This is fantastic,” I exclaimed as she flew steadily though the air. She laughed. “Exhilarating isn’t it? I love flying like this.” For a while we hung in the air as she beat her wings with apparent ease. I stared down as the towns that were so familiar to me breezed past. As we were soaring over Caloundra my mother suddenly stopped in mid air. I looked at her face; she was no longer concentrating on what was happening with her body, but glaring down at something on the ground. “Mother, what’s wrong?” “Someone’s attacking a vampyre, Jenny,” my mother replied, fury obvious in her voice. “A young vampyre?” I gasped, majorly taken aback by what she had just said. “One who just finished their training at the school from the scent I smell,” my mother replied. Her face shifted in the breeze. Then it clouded into a furious mask. A furious screech blasted the air as she registered a different scent. “This I cannot simply fly past, Jenny.” I was actually quite scared right now, and I was sure she could tell that was the case with me. She slowly glided down to one of the alley ways and let go of me. “Wait here,” she said. “I won’t take long to do what I have to do.” “Be cautious,” I said. I knew that this was going to be hard for me to sit out and wait for her. “I always am, Jenny,” she laughed. Then she leapt into the air and I watched as she dove carefully down to somewhere nearby. As she must have landed, something howled in the night. A werewolf, I knew but I had to be careful not to give myself away. All the things that my mother taught me about staying out of harm's way in a world that was unlike to what I had always believed started to come to mind. While those thoughts did, I moved unconsciously towards one of the street lights only to turn away in pain as my uncovered mark reacted. It was not too painful but the meaning behind the throbbing was clear. I had to stay away from that sort of light when my marks weren’t hidden. Then again, the adult vampyre who’d helped us did not recoil from the light. All of a sudden, making me yelp in fright, a huge wolf flew through the air slamming into the light post. I yelped for a good reason the wolf was twice the size of any normal wolf. It sank to the ground crouching and snarling. I saw the razor sharp canine teeth as it leapt at someone. The light hit the persons face as the wolf collided and in it was my mother. I gasped in terror. Quick as a cobra striking, my mother lashed out with her hand, knocking the wolf to the ground. I looked on as she systematically beat the wolf, her hands moving quickly and surely. When finally it lay crumpled and unable to fight any longer she looked down at it and said, “Be gone from this city. If I find you annoying any human ever again I will kill you. Do you understand?” “I wasn’t annoying her. She was my friend!” the wolf growled. I laughed for only a second before shutting up. Hearing human words coming from the mouth of a wolf was rather funny. The idea just did not seem plausible. My mother shot me a warning glance as the wolf leapt to its feet, glaring at me. I gulped, backing away, terrified. Then the wolf leapt at me, obviously realizing how important I was to her. Yelping I tried to get out of the way. Damn too slow human reflexes. The wolf knocked me to the ground and grinned at me, lowering its face towards my throat. Just before it could bite and kill me, something sent it flying away from me. Its teeth did graze my neck though just as my mother kicked it in the size. I felt the strength of her kick and was amazed. Then I felt something wet dripping slowly down my neck. Looking away from my body for a second I saw the wolf get up and then howl for a few seconds. It then bolted away. Something about the howl chilled me, I had a feeling that howl was for a triumph that did not seem possible. Then my mother was beside me and gently lifting me up into her strong arms. “This might hurt a little,” she said, gently running a hand down my hurt neck. “What might?” I asked. “You’ve been bitten by a werewolf when you’re already becoming a vampyre. Their bites are poison to us, Jenny. The only way to overcome the bite of a werewolf is for an adult vampyre a lot older than you to bite you themselves,” she explained. “You mean that you have to bite me for me to live any longer?” I demanded. “Surely you would prefer it was me rather some unfamiliar person from who knows where,” my mother replied. From her words I could tell that I was right. So I finally said, “Alright, do it, but please don’t hurt me.” “I’ll give it my best effort not to,” she said. She then gently lifted me up into her arms and stood up. Then she slowly inclined head towards my neck. Something sank into me and I knew that she was already biting me. It was strange though, I felt no pain when even when someone was bitten by a vampyre to be fed from, they could feel some sort of reduced pain. However right now I felt nothing except for the fact her fangs were in my neck. I was aware of the fact she was drinking from me, but not in the way I guess I should have been. When she pulled aware from me, and then gently ran her tongue along my throat, I sighed. “That did not hurt in the slightest,” I told her. “I’m glad to hear that. I did not want to hurt you at all, Jenny. I better get you to the school, before someone else gets attacked and this happens again,” my mother said, her voice indifferent to what had just happened. With that she took hold of my bag, brought her beautiful wings out into being and sight and then leapt up into the air. “It’s strange though, mother. All the stories I have heard of people being fed from by your kind. What just happened makes no sense,” I said. “Oh? What have people been saying?” my mother was curious now. Great so maybe I should not have said anything. She would figure it out any way, the adult vampyres were psychic though it depended on how old they were as to how strong this abiility to read minds was. “Well, people say that when they get bitten by a vampyre for that reason, they can feel some soret of pain. Its not too unpleasant, but its impossible to ignore. You just drank from me. I should have felt that,” I said. “Any yet I felt nothing.” “I was not feeding from you. It’s different when its an adult vampyre and fledgling like you. We cannot hurt each other in that manner. Though sometimes we do Imprint. Imprint’s are more common though when a human is the one being bitten,” she said, “you’ll learn a lot more about all this at the school.” “If you were not feeding from me, what were you doing? I felt my blood depart my body and not come back,” I said. Surely I was not imagining things right now. “Yes some of it I did take but not to actually feed. Instead theres something going on inside me that will eventually tell me whether you have indeed been poisoned or not.” She continued to fly as she spoke. “I’ll know very shortly.” “Why does it matter so much to you?” I asked. I wanted to know and I was actually a very curious girl right now. She smiled. “It would tell me whether I need to get you to the school or not in a hurry. Luckily I don’t.” “You already know?” I asked in amazement, looking back as she started ot dive towards the bround again. “Yes.” She looked at the ground that was getting closer. She landed just outside a massive ornate and ancient iron gate. “Welcome to your new school and life, Jenny.” I looked up at the gate as someone appeared on the other side. They came down the path and stopped on the other side of the gate, opening it. “Ah, Miss Andrews, about time you got here. Nice to see you again, Julia,” the person said. From the voice I could tell that the vampyre was female and her voice sounded friendly. “This is where I have to leave you. In about a month you’ll see me again dear,” my mother said. I glanced back at her, fright showing my eyes. “Do you have to leave?” “Unfortunately yes,” my mother replied. “Professor Renaiya will look after until you meet your mentor.” “Who is expecting you, fledgling,” the teacher said. She glanced once more at my mother and then smiled down at me. “Come this way dear.” My mother gave me a gentle hug and then unfurled her mighty wings once more. I watched her fly off into the sky, feeling very much alone now that she was gone. Then the vampyre spoke. “You’ll be alright dear, come along.” Her voice was gentle and kind. I gulped. Where there were all those trees out in front of me, outside the gates, my old life lingered. It was so hard to accept that by turning my back to them, my old friends were being forgotten. Not that I would ever forget about them. Slowly I turned around, taking a deep breath, and started to walk over to her. She smiled at me, and I took a good look at her face. There was the filled in golden crescent moon like my mothers, on her forehead. Ranging out from either side covering to her cheekbones were heaps of delicate looking golden waves. A lot like the ones I often saw people surfing on. “As you just heard, my name is Professor Renaiya,” she said gently. “I can’t believe how much you look like your mother once did.” That made me gasp. “You knew her at my age?” I was a little shocked. This vampyre could only be about twenty and my mother was well into her fourties. “Yes, I was her mentor, to be truthful. Seeing you make’s me think that she never left me here.” “Except for my skin colour,” I said, my voice reminding. “That makes little difference to me. I only notice what someone is like I do not judge them by their appearances,” the vampyre laughed. that made me smile. I was so used to people not being friendly towards me because of my skin colour. This must have shown on my face because she said, “The students here are taught to not judge people by their appearance, but by their personalities.” I nodded. That too made me feel a little more comfortable with the fact I was not in my old life anymore. It also made me realize just how tired I really was. I failed to hide the yawn that escaped me. “Sorry about that,” I apologized. “No it’s quite alright dear, I would have been surprised if you were not tired at this time of night and arriving here.” She smiled kindly. “How about I take you to your mentor and she can show you around?” “Sounds good,” I muttered, a little frightened but not so much anymore. She chuckled and we headed off into the darkness away from the gates.

Chapter 3 Professor Renaiya led me under the shelter of one of the buildings. Then she opened the door and said, “Come on in out of the cold.” I looked around as I entered, quite surprised by my surroundings. I was in a well lit building, illuminated by normal everyday human lights. The walls were artfully painted, a bright gold that was slightly duller than the colour of our marks. The hallway we were in looked like it had come from a familiar home that we would all leave if chosen. “Wow,” I said, feeling a little more energy left yet for me to use up. “Different to what you expected?” the vampyre asked. “Well, yeah totally,” I exclaimed. None of the words in my huge vocabulary were able to sum this up so easily.i looked around, there was no one about right now. “This is the teachers hall. If ever you need to see one of your teachers about part of the work you do in class this is the place to come to. The teachers will always be available to help you until 4.30am.” “That’s a long night. They don’t sleep?” I asked, a little confused. “yes we all do, actually. Our days are the reverse to human days.” I gulped. That meant I slept during the day! I never had been able to sleep then. It was simply impossible to me and that was saying something. I mean, if that were true, then what was I to do? “There’s one problem with that. Not once have I slept during the day,” I explained. “You might find that that has changed now that you are a vampyre.” “maybe,” I muttered. Hopefully it had. Otherwise I would always be tired. That was surely not going to be a good thing. We moved into a second corridor and I saw several vampyres lounging about, some with a fledgling or two asking questions. Every one seemed completely relaxed around each other. “It’s not 4.30 yet,” my vampyre explained. “Though it is getting close.” Just then a tall female vampyre, as beautiful as the rest of the adults, descended the curling stairs in the corner of the room. The reaction to her coming was instantaneous. Every fledgling and vampyre in the room bow to her, one fist enclosed over their hearts. I was the only one who did not for a few seconds. Then I mimicked one of the others. Everyone watched as she moved over towards me and my guide. “Thank you Renaiya for going to get our newest student from the gate,” she said in a deep cheerful voice. Renaiya looked up and smiled. “It was my pleasure, Head Warden.” I looked at this new vampyre and could instantly tell that she was powerful. Something radiated from her and I had no idea what exactly it was. She looked at me then. “Come my dear fledgling. We have some things to talk about.” I was stunned into silence as I took in her tattoo. It was the image of a rearing griffon, well two of them, framing her white skin. She smiled, breaking my transfixed gaze. “Come this way, my dear,” she said. I nodded and followed her through the group of clustered teachers and fledglings all with their eyes on me now. I had a feeling that they all respected this vampyre. She led me up the stairs to a door at the other end of a hallway. This oak door she opened and waved me in. I walked in and took in yet another surprising room. It was like any office I had ever seen. But it was still different, in the way things were set up. I almost felt completely at home in here. She had a very ornate desk, a very comfortable egg chair behind it, and several shelves of books. Plus her own television which filled me with envy. I jumped when she closed the door. “I’m glad you’re finally here. The girl who will be your room mate has been pestering me non stop,” she said. “My name is Karen, High Priestess of our goddess, Phoenicia.” “It’s good to meet you,” I said, feeling a little more relaxed. At least there was no one here to listen in, except her. “Well now you’re here, what do you want me to call you?” she asked. “What do you mean?” I asked confused. “Well, now that you’re becoming one of us, you have to start a whole new life. That means that if you wanted to, you can change you name,” she explained, smiling. “Oh.” I thought about what she had said. It was possible to change my own name? That was so unexpected and I had to smile at the thought. What would be a good name to have that could be unusual. My first name I knew was easy but my last name. I sighed mentally. This was a problem, trying to figure out the right name. Then I smiled once more as the name finally sprung into my head. “Okay… I think I know the name I want,” I said. She chuckled softly. “And what is it?” “Umm… Jenny Night?” I asked, a little nervous. “Then Jenny Night you will be from now on. I would like to know though, what was your old name?” now she was the curious one. “Jennifer Henrietta Andrews,” I muttered. Her eyes widened in surprise. She seemed taken aback by the name I stated. “What?” I demanded. “You’re not Julia Andrews’ daughter by any chance are you?” “Actually yeah, I am,” I countered. “What’s it to you if she’s my mother?” “She’s famous amongst vampyre kind, dear girl. And you likely will be too,” Karen replied. I gulped. There was no way in hell I was ready for that. “Damn,” I said. Hell, I was not really ready for anything to happen today. Especially not a new life. “I know this is a lot to take in, Jenny, but in time things will be normal again for you. It only takes about a week for new fledglings to get used to their new life, and cast away the remnants of their past,” Karen informed me. There is no feasible line of attack for me to throw away my old friends,” I replied. “I’ve known them all my existence.” “Human acquaintances can not be kept by us in this life, Jenny,” she reprimanded me. “In support of their own protection, as well as our own.” I gulped. “They’re not human!” “What are they then?” her voice was suddenly sharp. “Well… umm… they’re a demon and a werewolf,” I replied, certainly trembling. Surely this would deeply offend her. “You must eliminate them from your mind. They will be distant for the rest of your life,” she said, her voice somewhat understanding. “They’d never do that themselves to me. Our friendship is too strong,” I exclaimed. “I’ve known them as humans for about fifteen years. We were all bitten at the same time, tonight.” But there was uncertainty in my mind now that she had said that. Angeline was sliding away from me, and I knew it. Ashleigh though, was not. I really hoped that Angeline would come around and become my friend once more, but bit by bit I was starting to think that she would not come around now. Sighing I looked at the vampyre again. “So what now?” “Well, about twenty of you are just joining us today so you will be sorted into your school houses. After that, tomorrow you will start learning,” Karen replied. “School houses?” I asked, a little confused. What school houses? My mother never mentioned that to me. “Yes, there are four school houses. Thy are Fire, Earth, Wind and Rain.” “So the houses are named after the elements?” I clarified. “Yes they are. All classes and the dormitories for each house are in this building. This floor is mainly for the teachers, but since you’re new no one really minds you being here. Of course this is because your mentor should be the one you come to see when you come here. I’m surprised your mother has said nothing about this place to you,” Karen finished, “People will certainly recognize you, and this ignorance won’t be any good for you.” I nodded; there was so much to take in that I never knew. Surely in time I would get used to it all. It made sense though that people might recognize me. My face was a familiar one, at some vampyre gatherings as my mother liked to involve dad and I in her world. “Is there anything else I should know?” “Well I know this may sound strange, but I hope you know something about the lifestyle of this school,” Karen said. “Yeah, I do. Sleep during the daylight, awake during the starlight,” I replied. “Stay out of sight of werewolves and demons as often as achievable. Don’t single out fights with anyone older than me.” “Well you definitely know the rules, which will help you to get used to your new life. I better show you to the Feasting Hall, Jenny,” Karen said. I nodded, feeling jumpy again. I had no way of knowing if I was going to fit in or not. Not everybody was like me and had a photographic memory. She moved over to the door and opened it. I walked over and through it, dodging a huge Tabby cat as I did. “There you are Ciaai,” Karen laughed as the cat sprang up at her. “This is my cat, Jenny.” “She’s really pretty,” I said. Karen smiled and then started to move along the corridor. I ran to catch up. We walked along many corridor’s she finally entered a smaller chamber. “Wait in here with the others, please,” Karen said, backing out of the room. I entered and looked around. Most of the girls were white skinned in here. Two were slightly darker skinned but none were dark dark like me. Some girls’ shoulders were constantly twitching. A few were having timid conversations. Others were sitting alone looking really too scared to try and make friends. Not long was I given to look around at my classmates, because only minutes later, Karen was back and she carried a piece of paper with her. “Freshman students gather around please,” she said and we all rushed over to her. Some of us were enthusiastic to get moving like me, others more timid and withdrawn. Some did not really care much that she was talking. “I am Head Warden Karen and in a few moments you will all enter the Feasting Hall and join your classmates but before that is possible at all, you must be chosen for a school house.” We all looked scaredly around at the freshman students on both side of us. I was just as scared as the others. “If you’ll form two lines, and follow me, we can begin.”

Chapter 4 Head Warden Karen led us out of the small chamber and through two double doors. I looked around eagerly. Four long tables stretched around the walls, seething with students. Some I saw had their wings out, others drinking a strange red liquid that looked very think with their teeth who also had wings. The Feasting Hall itself was massive and we were lead through a gap in one of the tables into the center of the floor. I desperately hoped I would be picked for either Fire or Wind, and wondered how we were chosen for each house. A fifth table was in the center of the room, and about twenty adult vampyres were lounging there, wings out, and completely relaxed. A magnificent chair was in the middle of its short length, unoccupied. In front of this table was a raised platform upon which sat a golden griffon, clicking its beak as it saw us with red eyes. At Karen’s instruction we gathered in front of where it sat. We were all very timid when we saw it. Then it leapt into the air reciting a poem that it clearly had made. I may seem scary, But don’t hold that against me, Theirs none better to decide, Other than me, Where you ought to be. Will you be in Wind, Fleet of flight Friends for life, The commanders of the sky? Or will you be in Fire, Bringers of restoration, Brave and true to their house, And the bravest fighters? Or in wise old water, Keeping us alive? Or in beautiful earth, Bringers of life, Steadfast friends who don’t deny, Any kind of request? Strong the four houses are, in their own way, come to me, and let me see, just where you ought to be! The griffon fell silent and flew down to the ground. It settled comfortably as Head Warden Karen called the first name from her list, “Adams, Edgar!” A chubby boy moved forwards to face the griffon alone. We all watched scared as it got to its feet and reared, resting its front feet on his shoulders and gazing into his face. “Water!” it shouted and the western wall broke into applause and cheering. Ten more names were called and then I heard, “Night, Jenny!” I walked forwards, noticing that the hall had gone completely silent. What? I thought. Why the silence? “Did she just say Jenny Night?” voice whispered all through the hall. Okay this I was so not expecting. Almost as soon as the griffon looked at me, it snorted and I felt something searching through my mind. Hmm, willing to help everybody. A talent oh my goodness that’s has never be seen before. A strict loyalty to your friends. And a betrayal from an aunt…. Hmm where you should be put is a tricky question, a voice that sounded like the griffon spoke in my head. Please could it be either Fire or Air? I asked. Hmm, you do have the talents and the right blood for them. Though that narrows Air out of the question. Better be… “Fire House!” shouted the griffon. I broke my gaze from the griffon as one of the tables erupted into applause. It was the table on the north wall that had nearly everyone cheering, and I noticed that some people on other tables looked quite upset they did not get me. Then again that was confusing in itself and I had not reason to have a rational understanding of why the hell that was. There was nothing special about me as far as I knew and this was slightly worrying. As I walked I wondered what it meant by a betrayal from an aunt. None had betrayed me that I was aware of. I always knew when someone was planning to betray me; I could see it in their eyes. When I reached the table a red haired boy stood up and shook my hand. “Nice to see another new face comes to join noble Fire House. I’m Cody Harrison, Fire House’s student ambassador on the school committee.” “Well you obviously know who I am,” I said shaking his hand. “Nice to meet you, Cody.” For some reason though we had only met, I felt drawn to him which was weird. Since when did new kids get that reaction to someone as soon as they met a new person? Surely that was not natural. I took a seat as the griffon screeched again, “Fire House!” The rest of the students followed pretty quickly after them. Five were in Fire House, Five in Wind house, Three in Earth house and two in Water house. I had no trouble remembering the numbers because of my memory. Like the others who were in the position of being new to the school, I watched in amazement as food slowly faded into being on our plates. Almost every food imaginable had appeared and I wondered how they managed to make that happen. It was obvious that I was certainly in a different world now to the one I used to be in. Looking across at Cody I asked, “So Fire House has a certain requirement for blood type or something to be in here? What was that all about? The griffon mentioned it.” Cody finished the mouthful he had and then replied, “Fire house turns out to get all the famous vampyres. The griffon was merely stating that someone in your linage is famous amongst our kind. Earth house requires you to be the son or daughter of parents who are both vampyres. Wind house will take on anyone regardless of their blood status. And Water house expects that people join it are at least half vampyre to join.” “That’s a bit restrictive though, isn’t it?” I asked. “I don’t know who the famous vampyre in my family tree is.” “Well I know all the different famous vampyres of the previous generation’s names so why don’t you tell me who your vampyre predecessor is?” “Julia Andrews,” I replied without thinking about it. The few people sitting on either side of me fell silent when I said that. They all seemed to be paying attention in the discussion. I looked around in a little bit of surprise. “What?” Why were they all staring at me? it was starting to get a little unnerving. “We just learnt about her in one of our classes, a girl with pale brown wings said. “She’s meant to have killed hundreds of werewolves overseas.” I had to really think quickly. “Yeah, so what? I bet loads of vampyres have,” I said. “No actually we’re for the majority lucky to kill about a hundred werewolves and about fifty demons in one lifetime. The vampyres who are so few that can do more than that are really respected in this community. For some werewolves and demons, simply the sight of her diving at them makes them run away,” the girl answered. “My mother’s not a killer,” I said. Then I realized that she had been hiding this from me for a very long time. “Well not that I was aware of anyway.” They all stared at me in surprise. “She kind of did not tell me what she was until my birthday earlier in the year,” I mumbled, embarrassed. I was so certainly embarrassed by the fact I had had no idea of just who my mother was to all these people. “I’m guessing the fact she’s my mother might cause a lot of staring, right?” “Not if people don’t know who you are. Though some can tell just by your face, as you saw when Head Warden Karen called your name earlier,” Cody said. I grimaced. Why had my mother never told me of who she was before she brought me to the school? Then at least I would have had a little bit of a warning. This was going to be ever so embarrassing for a while. I never knew anything about my mothers actions as a Warden of the Dark and that bothered me in more than one way. “Does anyone know which school house she was in?” I asked. “Not many no. I’m sure it’ll be in the textbook somewhere, you learn about her in your first term,” Cody replied. “Don’t worry I’m sure it won’t matter if you’re in the same house as she was or not.” “I hope not. I know so little about this sort of thing and that is starting to really annoy me now. She’s hidden so much from me.” That really did seem unfair to me. I was in the house that the descendants of famous vampyres were in and yet I had no idea of my own parentage. How unfair was that? Of all the things to not know about. Then again, I would know about all that soon enough. “So when do we start learning?” I asked eagerly. “You’ll start in the morning. Only simple things to begin with but as you get further into this way of life and more powerful, the more complex things will get,” he replied. “I certainly hope we learn some interesting stuff. What sort of sport do you get to do here?” I was glad he was not annoyed by all my questions. Most people were so annoyed after the first few questions. “Equestrian, flying, and a few other things, you’ll be starting with equestrian tomorrow, probably first. I forget how it starts at the start of your time here, that was two terms ago for me,” Cody replied. I laughed. “Something I am actually good at to start with?” Those thoughts made me feel more at home to be honest. Maybe this place would not be so bad after a while as I thought it could be. I ate in silence for a while, knowing that I was in the place that I was meant to be now. No longer would human matters really effect me, unless those damn werewolves and demons were involved. Not that I really cared even for those matters as I ate in the wonderful hall. Later when dinner was finished, we were all told that the heads of our houses, as known as the student representatives, would show the newcomers to their dormitories. “Fire House, follow me,” Cody said, standing up. Across the room I could hear people calling the same thing to the other houses. Slowly we all made our way out of the hall and up a marble staircase. It was beautiful and along the statues were many stone and ceramic statues. Some were of a woman in different positions, wings folded in some, in flight in others and in some completely gone. There was a man as well, and he was the same. Both were very beautiful. I chuckled as I walked with the other newcomers, or Freshman Fire House students, and I knew that this was going to be an interesting term. There were four terms, this I knew and each had its own names for the students. Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior were the terms. Strange though because they were American terms yet I was not in America. “Hey what’s the go with the terms for each year level of students?” one of the girls asked nearby. “I don’t know,” the girl next to her said. “They’re not Australian, that for sure.” I smiled at both girls. “I know what they are and where they’re from,” I said. “Really? Where?” one of the girls asked. “Freshman is the newcomers like me, Sophomore is the second formers, Junior is third formers and senior I gasped. The one we had reached as a very well-known face. It was my mother, fighting a werewolf and demon at once. She was so energetic. Her wings were spread as she was avoiding both the wolf’s snapping jaws and the demons sharp horns at the same time as injuring the werewolf with a long blade. “What is it?” Emily asked in curiosity. “I know her,” I said. “This is my mother.” “Wow,” Emily said. “Now I see why that other guy was talking about a famous face in your family.” “Shit yeah,” Elle laughed. “That’s amazing. No one ever thought that one of her family would ever come back here again. She’s not been here in a long time, but apparently there s a guest coming tomorrow before school starts, a famous vampyre from each house previous students of the school.” “Really?” I asked. “That will be interesting.” “Yeah, the most current famous vampyres one male one female are coming,” Elle added. “Once a year, to encourage the freshman students on the start of their new journey.” “That s a pretty neat thing for them to do, I mean, some of us would be really scared now that we’re starting a whole new life.” We continued along the corridor and I had a feeling that I was going to have quite a few friends very soon. We stopped at a set of doors and Elle said, “Alright, here’s where we part at night or whenever we have to go get things. Tonight though, I’m allowed in with you, coz you’re new but tomorrow I won’t be.” “What are the doors for?” Emily asked. The first one is for you guys, the newbie’s to the house. The second is for the second formers, the third for third formers and the fourth; well I guess you get it. I’ll show you around your dormitory first. That is before I show you the rest of the House corridor.” Shit she knows a lot, I thought eager to get inside and look around. She opened the door and we moved in. The dorm was beautiful in its own way. There were about twelve chairs scattered about the room, all comfortable red pricey couches, several large flat screen televisions, a few book shelves, a computer lounge and a few places to work on homework. Beautiful stained glass windows let a little light in from the night sky. Elle herded us over to a stair case and said, “You’ll like coming up and down this. Boys can’t even set a foot on it.” As she spoke one of the guys tried to follow a girl upstairs and only got about five steps up before the steps turned into a metal slide, forcing him to the ground at the base, spread eagled. We all laughed. “Always one,” a voice said. We all turned around to see that one of the teachers had come in. “You should know better, Mr. Simmons.” I was surprised to see that is was Head Warden, Karen. She smiled at all pleasantly. “Welcome to Fire house, young ones. I’m sure you’re all wondering what it is that I happen to be doing in your dormitory common room. I simply came because I need to speak with one of the students; a guest has arrived who wants to see her before tomorrow morning.” She then glared at the boy called Simmons, a red head. “You should not be in here. Get out of the Freshman Common room you’re a Sophomore.” She then met my gaze as the boy hurried out. “Can you come out into the hallway please, jenny. I won’t keep you long.” I nodded and followed her out of the common room. Then I saw the guest. “Momma!” I cried in incredulity. There were several fledglings in the hallway, well, at least peeking out at her. “What are you doing here?” “”I’ve been invited here for tomorrow,” she replied, wrapping her arms around me. “I’m so glad you’re in noble old Fire house. It’s been a long time since I set foot in this hall as a student.” “So you were in Fire House?” I asked. “Why did you not tell me a lot of things about this place?” “We all learn about it on our own dear. No one is allowed to talk about their experiences here to their children until they’ve been here for at least half a term.” Her beautiful wings were unhurriedly making their way back into her shoulders now. “I’ve been on the wing, on patrol. I need to sit down for a little bit. Can I come in?” “Sure mom, come on in,” I laughed, leading the way.is the upperclassmen, and fourth formers. They’re American terms, though they do seem out of place here,” I explained. “Just like your accents different,” one of them noted. “Where’re you from? I’m Elle Ashton, one of the Sopohomores,” she said. She was a pretty attractive girl, long blond hair, brown eyes that showed she was smart. Then again looks could be deceiving. I smiled. “Well, I was born in America, in Seattle to be honest. Big city, bigger than the cities here though,” I replied. “I’m Jenny Night; it’s nice to meet you.” I extended one hand politely. “It’s not ever night that we get smart kids at the start of the year. Fire House is so cool,” Elle said. “She shook my hand then chuckled. “You’re going to love it here,” her friend added. “I’m Emily Hall, a Freshman like you.” “Yeah I know, I saw you in the gathering room,” I said recognizing the tan skinned girl. We turned up a fifth stair case to face a red griffon figure that blocked a passageway. “Here we are,” Emily chuckled eager. “Welcome to Fire House’s Hall.”

Chapter 5 “Who might you be?” asked the griffon, its eyes looking from face to face. Members of Fire House, where the bravest dwell,” Elle replied. “These two are Freshman students, Keeko.” Be guided by fire’s love,” the griffon snorted, got up and moved out of the way. “Come on you two, in you go,” Elle said. Both Emily and I gasped as we entered. The place we’d entered by was quickly filled by the crimson griffon. The passageway was so much more different to the corridors that we had been working our way through. Alone the walls were many paintings. Emily and I wandered along, looking from portrait to portrait slowly. Then I came to lone that was very surprising. It was my mother. She was completely focused on the Werewolf and demon attacking her at once, her face full of a calm fury that showed no fear of the two enemies. Her wings were spread as she made to dodge the wolf’s snapping jaws and the demons sharp horns. The common room was soundless immediately as my mother entered, holding my hand. My mother laughed as they all stared at the two of us. “I have a feeling this is unexpected,” she said quietly. “Err there are quite a few paintings of you in the corridors, more than of anybody else,” Elle said, the first to speak. “Really?” my mother was surprised. “I don’t actually see the newer pictures on the walls, we came straight here.” I laughed. “There’s heaps of you, mother,” I replied. Then I grinned at her. “Has the school changed much?” “Well apart from the obvious upgrades in technology, no,” my mother said. The rest of the corridors are the way I remember them, but a little darker than normal. Maybe that just because the school was not so old back in those days.” “What will you be showing us this year?” Emily asked. “I believe someone captured a werewolf and a demon and did not kill them. I suppose that’s what I’ll be demonstrating, Karen did mention something along those lines,” my mother replied. “If that’s what it is then you’re all in for a little treat aren’t you all?” I thought about that. Sitting right next to me was one of the strongest werewolf and demon hunters in the world, and I’d known her all my life. “You did not have to hide it from me, what you were, mum,” I said. “I would have believed you.” “I know my daughter, but I had my reasons. Plus once we leave the school, we’re not supposed to tell any children we have about the place,” my mother replied sadly. “I’m sorry I kept a lot from you, my dear. “Don’t worry about it mum, I guess you were just doing what was expected of you, nothing more.” I could not stop looking around at all the staring students, who were watching my mother with awe. “Looks like a lot of vampyres look up to you, mom,” I remarked. “Well, they have learnt about me. I know about that because the teachers had to ask me if that was alright. Obviously I agreed, and some of these students at least know something about me.” ‘Maybe more than I do, though,” I said, a little glum. My mother smiled and then looked up at the clock. “I think it’s time you all headed into bed.” This time when I groaned, a lot of us did. Obviously we did not want to go to sleep, but she sighed and pointed at the stairs. That made us all get up and move. A lot of people were grumbling though as they left. “You’re mothers pretty cool,” Emily remarked as we found that our beds were in two rooms next to each other in the curving staircase. Mine was at the top of the staircase, but that did not bother me at all. In fact it sort of made me feel at home. Emily was in the bedroom just below mine. I knew that the two of us would be good friends once school was well underway. I looked around my room when I reached it. There was my own bathroom, plus a couch and bookshelf. Plus my own writing desk and computer. “This is really cool,” I said to the empty room. It was loads better than the room I knew waited for me at home in the holidays. I liked this one, a lot. Now I was worn-out after climbing the stairs and in wondered if I had to walk down them in the morning. That was a good likelihood and I did not like the idea. There were just so many. Then again I guessed that in time I would get used to having to climb them and think nothing of it any more. That too was very possible and I knew it. I sighed and loved over to the huge four-poster bed in the center of the room. I was not used to having a double bed, much less seeing my own blankets and pillows were making up the bedding on it. Then I followed my mind as I drifted to sleep in a familiar bed. Well as familiar as it could be since I was not in a familiar room. When I woke up in the morning I knew that today was the true beginning of my new life. Heading over to the closet that was on the opposite wall I took a look to see what the school uniform was. Everything in there was bright red. That surprised me. On all the clothing I could choose from to cover my upper body was a fiery golden spiral. I knew what that was, the emblem of my house most likely. It did not take me long to have a shower and pull my hair back into a neat bun on the back of my head. This done I headed down to our common room. There waiting for me, was Emily. “Hey Emily,” I said greeting her. I’d ended up choosing a short-sleeved polo shirt and knee length skirt. She however was wearing red roper jeans and a light red singlet. “Hi Jenny, have a good sleep? Elle’s waiting outside for us, since she cannot come into our common room.” “Yeah I did, we better not keep her waiting,” I chuckled. “That was one interesting first night huh?” “Yeah. First up after breakfast, your mothers going to be showing off her vast amount of skills to us,” Emily replied. “Oh yay, I get to see my mother fighting for a second time in twenty four hours,” I muttered. I looked outside and was amazed to see that the sky was bright with sunlight already. Then we left the common room and found Elle waiting for us. “Come on you two. Don’t want to be late for breakfast, do you?” she asked cheerfully. Both of us shook our heads to say no. she laughed and led the way down to the Feasting Hall once more. As we walked I was aware of a lot more color in the hallways. The students from the other houses were moving too, and I noticed the house colors were abundant now. Green, red, yellow and blue were all visible in the halls now, as well as a deep purple that the teachers were wearing. When we were all taking our seats however someone else flew into the room, wearing dark, black clothing. Her hair was fixed in a bun on her head, and her powerful wings were spread out as she dived to land near the staff table. All of us looked up as she did, watching with curiosity. It was my mother, once again showing her command of the air in which we could all fly. I was also aware that many students were coming through the door in the air as well, obviously practicing their maneuvering skills, though they needed to, unlike my mother and the teachers who educated us. There was no chance that they would ever be as powerful as my mother was. While we ate in silence I thought about what my mother was planning to do when we were all finished and refreshed. Though I had seen her take on a werewolf before, I did not really know how she would do it this time. The stupid mutt had been sidetracked by the sight of me, a helpless brand new fledgling. Not that I really cared that I was the reason she was able to thoroughly kick its butt. If I ever met that mongrel again, I would be sure to repay it for the unlucky bite it gave me. That I was promising myself. It gave me a reason to learn and study hard. There was no better thing for me to do, then to put my photographic memory to a true test. Nothing was impossible that was something I always knew. I could do anything if I put my mind to it. Not that I was planning on fighting a werewolf or a demon any time soon, I was too inexperienced right now. One day soon, I promised myself, I would find that wolf and kill it. Then as I thought those thoughts about the wolf, I was ashamed. My best friend was a wolf and I would not fight her, though I knew it was expected of me now. Ashleigh and Angeline, a werewolf and a demon. I could not attack them. It had been too long since we first became friends. That friendship would prevail with them. I knew it would and I hoped they knew that too, there was no chance of a struggle if we came face to face. If they remembered that, then we would always remain the good friends that we already were with each other. They would have to attack me first before I would attack them. Okay so maybe they were not going to be the easiest friends in the world to have, but somehow, I hoped that we would manage even with our newest differences. Sure there was the fact that we were enemies, but to me that really did not matter a great deal. These things I hoped could be overcome, though I had no idea how we would do that. One day though, I knew that we would work things out. For now I would simply have to talk to them, not face to face, but via msn and email. There was no way that a confrontation between the three of us would be a good idea right now. We were all too raw into our new life. There was certainly no doubt about that. Now that everyone had finished eating, we were all led over to a huge other hall. It was a bit like a stadium except for the fact that a glass dome shielded the stands from the action that we were to watch. “Is that glass really enough?” Emily asked as we took three seats near each other. “Demons have to stay away from glass. It’s lethal to them, as is crystal,” Elle replied with a sour grin. “So yes, it will be enough. See the faint webbings of silver through it?” “That’s silver coated glass, isn’t it the lethal thing for a werewolf,” I queried. “So it is, yes, so whoever’s in there to fight them has an easy chance of avoiding their attacks,” Emily asked. “That’s its intended reason for being there, yes,” Elle said. “Since we know their weaknesses, we can use them against them. Foul creatures,” she muttered. “If they have an Achilles' heel, surely they know ours?” “They probably do, and it happens to be wood for us. However most of us are fast enough that we can reel them. Not to mention we all can pack a mental punch that that can knock out our enemies.” She laughed. ‘They always try to beat us before we can beat them.”

Chapter 6 It did not take long before the stands were illuminated by a few huge lights. Then a door opened and a tall proud demon walked in. we all jeered as he and the werewolf paced around waiting for someone. They snarled and hissed at all of us in vehemence. I laughed at their faces along with everyone else. They deserved to depart this life, filthy heartless scum that they were. Then I heard several people encouraging something as someone swooped down into the fighting area. I cheered as my mother swooped over the demon and werewolf, soaring a entire circuit of the corral summarily. She was checking out the space she had to exchange blows in, no doubt. Then she screeched at the werewolf who had changed form into a massive wolf and was growling irately. We all laughed at him. Then she started to dip down lower, just above the werewolf’s snapping maw. Then she kicked out with one foot sending it flying backwards through the air. It certainly was funny to see the wolf go flying backwards without any control over where he was going. He landed with a thud but leapt to his feet in fury. Now the demon leapt towards my mother and I saw my mother slash her hand upwards towards him, winding the creature. Slowly but surely she wore the two monsters out, they were barely able to catch her. This was certainly interesting for us to all watch and definitely very valuable knowledge. She had started out like us and had grown into this powerful creature of the night. It gave us a good indication of just what we were able to become. When the fight was finally over and the two creatures dead, I was one of the first to go close to my mother as she carefully calmed herself down once more. It was obvious that many of the other students were both dazzled and frightened of the speed and furious precision that she’d used to show us just what we could become. There was no chance that I would ever be that strong. I loved my friends and I just could never think that I could hurt them. Then again, one day they would simply be another werewolf and demon to me I guess. I hoped that we would start being taught soon I could not wait to have my equestrian test once more. That would show my teacher that I knew how to ride and that I had a few skills up in my head about the whole learn to ride a horse issue. Hopefully if I passed, she would allow me to bring my horse to the school. Having Naraya here would help me feel more at home and I knew this was a worthy goal for me. as soon as we were told to head to our classes, Elle showed Emily and I to where the riding arena was. There was no chance that I would ever forget the way, after all I had the smell that I knew so well to follow. Of course the smell I was talking about was the smell of horse dung. Sure to the none horsy person, horse dung was a sad and yucky smell. But to any horse lover, it was just another horsey smell that that sort of person liked to have around them. When we got there I laughed and looked at the huge stable. Out the front another vampyre waited for us. This was a tall leonine woman with a prancing stallion for her facial tattoos. Her hair was in a long braid down her back and was a bright orangishred like the mare that she held on a lead rope. “Greetings my newest students. Today you will be tested, to see which of you has promise as an equestrian competitive rider and those of you who don’t. those who don’t I will send to a different class. Come with me into the stables, there is a whiteboard with the horse’s names on it. The horse who’s name is with yours is the horse you will ride. You have ten minutes to be in the ring which is at the other end of this corridor.” We all scattered into the building to see who we were to ride. I saw that my name was next to a horse named Barley and I hurried to find his tack and then find him. There was no chance I would be one of the last to leave the stalls. When I found him I was surprised to see that he was a palomino Quarter Horse gelding. As soon as he spotted me, he swung his head around to me, ears laid back and teeth bared. Surely this must be a mistake, I thought. “Five minutes students!” called the professor. I entered the stall carefully and reached my hand out in front of me to sniff. He did and then let me forwards. Quickly I saddled and bridled the gelding and led him to the ring. The teacher was surprised to see me as I led the rest of the class out to the ring. “Its not everyday that Barley is the first horse out here with a rider. Usually he is the last, Miss Night,” she said. “I know horses,” I replied, mounting him like the rest of the class. He seemed completely at ease with me on his back. I sat tall in the saddle, and knew that I had his attention. Both his ears were pricked forward and he was motionless below me. our teacher led us to the small arena nearby and had us all enter. “When I call your name, I want you to walk into the arena, get your horse to trot, canter and gallop and then slow back to a walk and halt.” She rode into the arena. I laughed and waited and watched as the others started. A few of the others were able to get their horses to trot and canter, but none galloped. “Miss Night!” I nudged my horse forward into a walk and he obeyed immediately. He leapt into action, he could tell I was not one for the idea of my horse misbehaving when I was in the saddle. Nope instead I was all business and no nonsense. I laughed as my horse broke into a trot on command. It was a rather boucy trot and I loved him immediately. It was similar to that of a thoroughbred I rode once. This horse had been on the race track once, I supposed. I held him steady, my leg aids hardly visible. I was a excellent rider, I’d won things at many shows. Then I nudged him into a fast trot. Twice around the ring we went and then I gave him the command to canter. Oh what a bliss that was, he was like a rocking horse in every sense of the wooden thing. I certainly felt like I was on one. For a while I sat to his gait, getting used to it, before I assumed jumping position and urged him into a gallop. Never had I galloped on a Quarter Horse and it was amazing. If you’d never done it before like me, you knew now why the quarter mile racers were so favored at times on the ranches and things. I felt him eager under me as he moved and then regretfully slow down s I held him back into a canter. It took next to no time for me to slow him right down and gain total control over him in a walk. He was eager to do as I asked and I liked him. When we stopped the teacher nodded at us and I walked him back to the others to put him in the stable. When I got in there I put him loose in his stall and un-tacked him. That done I went to find his grooming gear. There was no job I left half done and I prided myself on that. I stood near him, brushing him as I heard another horse led into the stable. It was Emily. “You did really well, Jenny,” she said, grinning at me. “A lot better than I did, this horse would not canter no matter how hard I persisted.” “Well, you got further than most of the kids I was watching. I’m sure you’ll be continuing on. I have a dream and I am trying to reach it,” I replied. “What’s the dream?” “To compete in the next Olympics on the horse I own at home,” I replied, not feeling smug about it this time. I chuckled as I finished with him. The rest of the class was coming in now and our teacher was going from stall to stall telling who passed. Soon she reached my stall, and I looked up from picking out one of Barley’s hooves. “Miss Night, I believe you are one of the people I am interested in teaching. You did better with barley than anyone else has in a long time,” she said. I looked up at her completely surprised. “Did I really?” I was slightly surprised by that. Maybe I just knew what I was doing of something. Then again the fact she said that I had done better than anyone else alarmed me. ‘What do you mean better than anyone else?” “Well usually he manages to stay in a walk, is always last out of the stables and is generally very stubborn,” she replied. I grinned. “I used to ride a horse like him a long while ago, and then I outgrew the pony and bought a new horse. Am I allowed to have him brought over here at all?” “I suppose you may as well, I was going to ask you if you had a horse of your own.”

Chapter 7 “Well that had to be the best lessons ever,” I said as Emily and I walked out of the stable. “I really enjoyed myself a lot.” “I know you did it was obvious when you were putting that horse through his paces for our teacher. I can’t believe I made it in as well. I did not think I would,” Emily replied. I waved to Emily as she walked over from a different direction. She grinned and said, “Enjoy your class?” “Hell yeah,” I replied. “We both made it in for the year.” “That’s great,” Elle laughed. “Glad you both did. Either of you own a horse?” “When’s lunch, I’m starving,” Elle asked. “After your next class, I think their serving freshly baked crumpets,” Emily laughed. “isn’t that a breakfast food?” I asked. “who cares their delicious with peanut butter.” We all laughed at that. “I guess you’re right,” I replied. As we walked to the next class I asked, “So what are we doing this time I mean what’s the class called?” “Wing Works,” Emily replied. “You’ve got my teacher, Professor Garner.” “Wing works?” I asked. Emily laughed and then her wings slowly took form. They were not as well made as my mothers or any of the professors, but she still had wings. “You’ll be learning to use these.” “Sweet,” Elle replied. I laughed with Elle and we hurried into the classroom. Elle and I looked around at the room in amazement. It was set up as some sort of arieal obstacle course. There were groups of other house students clustered in the room as well as a tall lady with orange hair and orange wings. She looked up as we entered and said, “Finally here Miss Perkins, Miss Lewis and Miss Night?” “Sorry professor, these two got lost so I helped them find their way,” Emily replied. “Alright then,” the professor said. “Class!” Everyone gathered around, some stretching their wings experimentally. “Now those of you who have wings, will be completing the obstacle course First formers, the sooner you’re wings appear the sooner you may do it as well.” She smiled. “I’ll be helping you bring out those wings while the others do the course.” I grinned as Emily and the others took to the air in the huge gym. The professor had us all work on popping our shoulders out of the normal position. Then she told us, “Think about the wings you would always want to have. Will them into being. They will appear when what you want is how your wings are mean to be. Close your eyes and do this now. When I tap your shoulder, you will be allowed to take to the air.” I closed my eyes, thinking hard, deep into the depths of my head. What were my wings? Would they be like my mothers? I wanted a long pair of eagle wings, black as the night sky, beautiful and powerfully. I thought heavily about them, wishing that they would sprout from my back. Time seemed to go very slowly as I visualized myself in the air, doing the obstacle course. Then I felt a light tap on my shoulder and opened my eyes. I opened my eyes and looked behind me. There were the wings, exactly as I wanted them. No one else had their wings yet which amazed me. I spread my wings, nearly knocking someone over and then thrust them down, surprised byt the grace it took for me to get into the air. As I raised myself to the platform I saw Emily was about to jump from it, no wings. “What are you doing Emily?” She laughed at me and then jumped before I could stop her. As she fell for a few seconds, two rose red wings burst from her shoulders and she streaked into the air laughing happily as she wove her way through the obstacle course. When she landed back beside me I laughed. “You scared me,” I told her shakily. “Sorry, not used to having people in the class watching out for me,” she laughed. “I know better than to not unfurl my wings in time. It’s your turn to do the course.” “Mi..ine?” I stammered as I moved to the edge of the platform. “I’ll be right beside you,” she laughed as a different first former flew up to join us, scowling at me. he was a Water house student. Then Emily leapt into the air and I followed her carefully, ignoring the boy. Soon I found it was very easy to keep apace with Emily. Which completely shocked both her and me. “You’re a lot better than the average first former,” she chuckled, dodging a ball of fire. I grinned soaring after her in absolute joy. There was no chance of anything crashing into me. by the time we finished the course I saw that everyone was staring at me in curiosity, even our teacher. “You’re a lot more advanced than these others, Jenny.” “I am?” “Yes. Who are your parents?” I sighed rolling my eyes mentally. “Well the vampyre one is Julia Andrews.” “No wonder you’re so agile,” she exclaimed. I sighed. I had been expecting someone to bring this up though not as very often as this. “Sure, I have a really famous mother, don’t be expecting anything from me,” I replied. There was no chance I could be anything like my mother it just sounded so so so impossible to me. There was no chance that I would ever meet my mother’s reputation like they all likely expected of me. Plus my mothers sister was a demon, how unfair is that? Everyone I knew was turning to be enemies and that seriously sucked. Not with the friendship issues I had to get over one day. The day hell froze over that would happen. I was not one that was likely to forget Angeline and Ashleigh no matter what they really were now, my enemies. I would die before I had to kill them and I knew that was not normal for a vampyre. Seriously no one was going to hurt my friends and not have me have a go at them for it. Angeline and Ashleigh I hoped were able to realize that. If not I guessed there was no reason to be so overly protective of them. For now though I was just going to let what happened happen. Who cared that the three of us were not human any more? Not me. I sighed as I followed the others finally to the Feasting Hall again. I was actually hungry now I was glad to be going back into there once more. When we got into there I saw four massive hourglasses filled with colored rice in the middle of the room. “What are they?” I asked, noticing there were different levels of sand in the bottom of each. “They are the hourglasses that keep score of each houses points over the year,” Emily said. “One per house, believe me it’s funny when points get docked to see them, rice does not usually fly.” I sighed in confusion. That was not realistic at all but then again the world I had know had been part of another, more carefully hidden one. I knew that there was no chance that I could possibly ever kick my friends butts. There was not possible chance of us ever even fighting. The rest of the day went quickly and I went up to my room to do the essays we’d been given. I switched on the computer in the room as well so I could check my emails and word on my current NanoWriMo entry. NaNoWriMo meaning National Novel Writing Month, set during the month of November where you had to write 50000 words during the one month. Opening up a word document titled, The Darl Spirit, word count 25,000 I read through the last few lines and then started typing. Kula cantered through the night, searching, ever searching. He was looking for his brother, a bay colt by the name of Sam. There was no sign of his favorite half brother and best friend, nor any of his mares. They were best friends and often spent time with each other running with their herds. Especially in winter not that it wasn’t laughed at by his brothers and sisters. Who ever heard of an almost adult horse palying with his brother? It was unheard of. Of course, Kula was no normal stallion, pure white was his coat and the wind was his father. Obviously, not the real wind, but something very like it. I sighed and stretched. I just had no muse today and that really sucked for me. there was not that much longer left in November, it was already the 20th, I had no chance of making it to 50,000 this year. Sighing I opened my msn account and was instantly set upon by Ashleigh. Hi J. Laughing quietly to myself I typed back, Hi Ash. Hows things at demon school? Its alright. I miss you heaps. We’re learning how to kill your kind tomorrow. What about you? Hows life as a scary bloodsucker? Not that bad. I got some friends and my mothers really famous too. Sweet, who is she? I’ve probably heard of her. Heard the name Nightstorm? *shudders in terror* no way it cant be! It is, I replied. I was sorry for her. There was no way she would ever believe that I was the daughter of Nightstorm, the legendary vampyre. She’s really an infamous vampyre amongst demons Jenny. Not a good thing for me to know that my best friends the daughter of that monstrousity. Hey, I’m still the same deep down. Seen my aunt at all? Yeah, she don’t know you. *sigh* I knew that might be possible. How’s Angeline? I don’t know, she has not talked in a while, J. *groan* I f u see her, tell her I miss her. I will J. talk 2 u 2morro? k. thank you. Cya l8r. I sighned off and started to research the things I needed for the essay I had. There was no chance that Angeline would come round. So I simply pushed all the memories of her into a draw in my head, locked it and threw out the key. Never again would I think of her as a friend. The change between friends and enemies was completely in full force between her and me. Ashleigh though was going to be hard to accept as an enemy. I sat there at my computer for a while not sure where to really go from there. I would miss my friends but perhaps the fact that they were to by my enemies was sa good thing. After all I had learnt to day that friendships not matter how minor between werewolves an vampyre r demons and vampyres rarely lasted very long. Maybe it was time t tell Ashleigh good bye? But no I just could not do it. So I zipped back onto msn briefly and clicked on her name once more. Hey want to sneak out of school and hang out for a while? I typed quickly. Yeah sure, Ashleigh typed back eagerly. I knew she was eager to see me again; we’d never gone two days without seeing each other, our friendship hurt when we were apart. I grinned and then typed, Meet where u and Ang got bitten. C u there. I’ll b there soon. Kewl, she replied and logged off. I knew I was to fly tonight and keep an eye on the town so this was a good time as any to meet with her. I moved over to my cubboard to locate the patrol gear that we each had when we were going out at night. It took me no time to put on the neavy black clothing and then I was moving downstairs, my silver coated dagger at my side and on the other a glass dagger. There was no better protection for me. “Going out on patrol J?” Elle asked. “Yeah, its my night to,” I replied. “Be careful, they’re sure to know tat a new vampyres coming out tonight,” she replied. “Always careful,” I replied. My mind was filled with joy at the idea of seeing my best friend again. Though we were meant to be enemies, we seemed alike in mind in the fact that we could not kill each other. I walked outside and called my wings into being. The only parts of me that Ashleigh would know was my hair, knotted on the back of my head in a bun and my cat shaped eyes. Grinning to myself I leapt into the air, rising high quickly. It would not take me all that long to reach Kawana and I knew that there would be werewolves and demons prowling below. There was no reason for them not to be. I soared across the land not using any effort to be honest. Then I saw Kawana’s many lights and dropped to an easier altitude to look for my friend. Slowly I flew along, eyes searching the ground for any demons or their other forms. There were a few but the one that caught my eye was staring right up at me, a huge golden lioness. Instantly I dove, screeching at her. None of the other demons seemed to notice me, they went about their business without a thought for her. Some friends, I thought as I landed. The lioness pounced at me and I knocked her away knowing how to from the brief dueling lesson I had had. I fused the hilt of my glass knife, there was no way I would use it on her. I crouched and hissed at her in warning, “Ashleigh!” She growled but slowly changed back into a human form. “I’m so sorry J.” “Don’t worry bout me, no harm done. Though I don’t know about the rest of the world. Is there somewhere we can talk in private?” “Come this way,” she laughed, bounding into the sky on two creepy looking wings. I flew after her, tough we made it look as though we were fighting. I followed after her, a little scared of her freaky looking wings. “What’s with the creepy wings? They look so evil,” I said as we flew. “I guess its just what I ended up with,. We don’t get to choose our wings as demons,” she replied. ‘I hate em so bad.” “Whereas I got to visualize my wings before they came into being in my head. Poor you,” I replied. I smiled sympathetically at her. Then I grinned. “How well can you fight?” “Well, in the three weeks we’ve been at different schools, I’ve been creating quite a name for myself amongst your type,” Ashleigh said. “Oh yeah? Like what?” I laughed. “Deathbringer!” she hissed. That made me recoiled away from her. “You can’t be serious. You can’t be Deathbringer,” I said. “Deathbringer’s older than you.” ”That’s simply an illusion,” she replied. “Deathbringer I am, J.” “You cant be. I cannot be friends with the Deathbringer that everyone hates,” I stuttered. “I cant be Ash.” My body was telling me to get out of there and I had half a mind to listen to its urgings. “Please tell me you’re joking.” She glared at me. “Are you telling me that you will not listen to the fact of who I am, Nightstorm? Yes I know that is who you are and I was told to exterminate you the second I met you. Our fucking human camaraderie got in the way!” I sighed. “I know it did. I was given the same orders about you, Deathbringer.” Then I grimaced. “Neither of us will ever be able to execute the other, our acquaintance will always get in the way, as maddening as that without doubt is.” I paused. “I guess what I am trying to say is that until our minds figure out that we are enemies we wont be able to do it.” “ I know that and it really is infuriating for me to have to put up with the smell you give off when my mind is telling me to kill. Do you see why I am getting so frustrated now?” “Yeah I do and I understand why, you give off the same reaction to me that your smell makes me react to. Frustrating really,” I laughed in amusement at the situation. Though I really did not understand why that was since I knew that it was not really a funny position. Not that for the moment did it seems that she cared either. In fact she in reality laughed with me. “We can still get along, it would seem,” she said. “lets try not to cross paths too often okay? Let me know if you want to talk and I’ll get your attention some how, even if it means pretending to hurt some human. After all if we just started talking people would wonder whether we are insane or not. Not any good for either of our images, I daresay.” “No that would not be good for either of us if people knew that Deathbringer and Nightstorm were friends,” I said, calling her joke happily. “Good luck to you, I best go get back on patrol of the skies.” “It was good to see you again, J. I don’t want to hear that someone killed you alright? If you become a bit of a pest, I would rather you and I fought, not some stranger in my place,” Ashleigh laughed. She stepped out of range as my beautiful midnight black eagle wings came into being. “They are so beautiful.” “Thanks,” I said, then I sprang into the air. Flying was natural to me, I did not even have to think about what I was doing any more.
