CHAPTER 1 - FIRST DAYS It was a curious thing, having so many creatures looking at the protected shell above my little body. Awe, and curiosity, two emotions I knew of as my mother had told me stories while I stayed in my egg were the main ones. Awe, because they were interested in the colour of my dark egg. Curiosity, because they wondered if I would finally hatch for them. Slowly more of the creatures would touch me. Then I was put away into a soft bag somewhere safe. I felt the heat of my mother’s neck when the bag was left alone. A week passed and I was watched carefully every day. I worked my way through the multitude of human minds that I had felt when they touched my egg. Finally I came to rest on one, the only female in the lot. Then my egg started to shake, and two talons on my mother’s foot grabbed me, holding me safely as I worked to get out of the thin shell around me. With a strength I had not been aware of I repeatedly attacked the egg, somewhat aware that all the humans had gathered to see who I’d chosen. At last my head emerged from the egg and then I ripped at it with my sharp fangs, pulling it to pieces. All the while, my mother held me securely in her talons. ‘My little boy,’ she said proudly. I ripped the last piece off and she released me. I looked up at the huge brown face that stared down at me with pride. As far as I was aware, she was my mother. I was frightened in an instant, she was so big and yet her face looked at me very kindly. ‘Mother? ’ I squeaked with my mind. ‘That I would be: Vindr is my name. Who have you chosen as your Rider? ’ I snorted and knew why she asked. The humans were all watching my with a strange emotion one their faces. It did not seem as friendly as I had expected. ‘What’s with their faces? ’ I asked. ‘Your egg was smoky grey. And yet you are ink black. A curious turn out even to me, ’ Vindr said, glancing at them. ‘Only one of them will come near me, and that will be the one you chose. ’ I looked at the humans with a curiosity I deserved to have. Then I saw them all parting as the human I had chosen came forwards. She looked small in comparison to the other boys around her. They all scowled as she passed and she seemed nervous. Then I decided to get up and greet her. Slowly working out how my legs worked, I got to my feet. Then I raised one foot and put in out in front of me, stretching, testing myself. It seemed fine so I did the same with the other legs. I then stretched my neck and wings a little too. It dismayed me when I could not fly yet. Then we met and my mother shifted her weight as I looked up at the girl happily. This was the person I had chosen and I wanted her to touch me. Slowly she lowered herself down to my level curiously. I made a strange growling noise at her. She seemed afraid and I instantly widened my eyes, pity showing in them. “I’m the one?” she mouthed at me. I nodded silently. ‘Of course. ’ She appeared not to hear me and I wondered why. Maybe it was because she had not touched me yet. I looked expectantly at her hand, waiting. Slowly she raised it and extended it towards me. It came closer until it was within my reach but she could not reach me. Quickly I darted my head up to touch her palm. All I wanted was to see what she felt like so I was not prepared for the little gasp of pain she made as I made contact with her. ‘What did I just do to her? ’ I wondered. She looked down at me in astonishment a few seconds later. “I cannot believe this,” she said. “You are my dragon and no one else’s.” ‘Duh, I chose you, ’ I thought. Hmm, I knew that was called sarcasm. Gently I nudged her again. No little gasp this time. That confused me. I’d hurt her the last time I touched her. Then she flipped her palm up and showed it to me. There was a rough silver circle on her palm. ‘I did that? ’ I thought. Then I sniffed it. A strange scent came to me, mixed in with my own. Soon I separated the two scents within my mind. There it would stay for the rest of my life, I was sure. Hers was interesting; I did not know it, which confused me the smell’s origin. Then the girl gently picked me up in her hands gently. I sniffed her face as she walked towards the others, in particular two people. “Hey mum and dad. Guess what?” she asked from a distance, putting me down. In an undertone she said, “Follow me.” I did just that. With curiosity I looked at the two humans watching our approach. They seemed to resemble my Rider in very distinct ways. I studied them with interest. That made me curious. I guessed I was looking at my Rider’s parents. When one of them, the woman, I presumed, looked at me she smiled in pride. “You’re a Dragon Rider, Angela,” she said. “That’s one cute little dragon honey.” “We’re both proud of you dear,” the man said. “I can’t believe my own luck,” Angela replied. I snorted. 'It was not luck that made you a Rider, it was my own choices,' I thought to myself. They talked for a little while longer and soon one of the Riders came walking to us. His red dragon followed after us. “Sorry to interrupt, but your daughter must come with me now. We’re about to head to Vroengard,” the Rider said. I looked up at the huge dragon in astonishment. How were we going to get there? I wondered at that. I could not fly yet. “My dragon cannot fly yet,” Angela said. “We are aware of that. You’ll travel by horseback to the other side of the Spine near Carvahall. Two of my fellow Riders will be escorting you,” the Rider said. “What is your name?” Angela asked. “Morzan is my name, this is Baen, my dragon,” Morzan replied politely. Morzan seemed to be very interested in me. I wondered why that was, it looked as if he was thinking something bad up. Baen looked down at us silently. He was not as big as my mother, he looked tiny in comparison. I guessed he’d only be two or three years older than me. Soon we were off and I sat on the horses hindquarters behind Angela. It was quite bouncy and I soon felt quite sore from the movement under me. That night when it was time for us all to sleep, I decided to sleep next to Angela. So I curled up, wrapping my tail around her arm comfortably. She stroked my neck as I stretched out. Soon I drifted off to sleep. More days passed and we soon reached where we were supposed to. I hated travelling behind Angela on the horse, but I knew it was quicker than walking. When we reached where we had to, I leapt down off the horse and sniffed at the strange white soft ground. I looked back at Angela inquisitively. “This is called a beach. You’re standing on the sand,” Angela explained. Tentatively I took a few steps and fell. This sand felt so unstable under my feet. Soon I made my way back to Angela’s side, amid falling over several times. I felt humiliated by that, no dragon ever fell over. So far I enjoyed being with Angela, she was certainly funny at times, and the other Riders often laughed at her jokes. Not that I got amused, only because I did not understand them.
