The Lone Werewolf
The sky was lit up into thousands of different rays of colour as the sun came up over the horizon. Looking out at it, I knew that there was no sight more beautiful in the whole world. For me though there was no person to share it with who cared.
People never wanted to be seen around me. The other humans hated me because they all knew there was something about me that was not regular by anyone’s standards. I was something different. There was something alien about the daughter of Frank and Jenny Holz, which was the story of my life.
Frank and Jenny were not my real parents. No I was an outcast, found one day in the woods looking after three wolf pups. When I had first seen Frank and Jenny, the ways of the wolf pack had overcome me. I defended the pups.
The reality of the situation was that for a very long part of my life, the wolf pack had been the only family I had. Memories of my parents were absent from my mind as time had diminished what I knew of them. Something that made me a little flustered some of the time.
When they found me, there was no chance that I had been alone for long. Frank and Jenny had been hunting wolves on horseback. The pack had came running back even as I had gotten in the way of the three puppies, seeming to sense the danger.
Luckily no one got hurt as I had learnt the human language from sitting and listening to the other humans and had managed to head off anything that posed a threat to my wolf family. I would not allow the humans to even think about hurting any of the pack. It was unthinkable.
Now though as I ran through the forest going to say hello to the wolves, since Frank and Jenny had realised that there was no point in them keeping me there in the village when no one liked me. They did not want me to be constantly picked on all the time.
Out of all the different humans I knew, they were the only ones who seemed to care about me. Everyone else made me feel unwanted. To them I was an outcast, not a member of the town, and certainly not a trustable person. All because of the way I had been raised.
I knew the wolves would be aware of me moving through their territory, but how long it would take them to come and find me as they always did I did not know. They at least trusted me, unlike the humans that were of my own kind.
There was nothing in the human town that I actually liked, and I did not really enjoy wearing what they called clothing. I just could not bring myself to wear such unpleasant things. Sure I had no nice warm fur coat, but who cared there?
Certainly not I. The wolves always made sure I kept warm; they let me snuggle up with them in winter so that I was kept warm by their own body heat. They cared for me in a way that no human could at the moment. They knew me the best.
Hearing the soft thud of paws coming towards me, I crouched, knowing even as I did that the wolf would know where I was. I ducked behind a fallen tree and was almost immediately tackled by the leaping grey furred wolf. We rolled over and I hugged the young wolf.
It amazed me to see her looking so grown up, when I had left the pack with Frank and Jenny, she had been so small. About thirty days had passed and here was this almost fully grown wolf, hugging me with joy. It truly was an amazing sight for me.
The wolf barked. “Yes I missed you too, Snowflakes,” I said, as she knocked me to the ground playfully. It looked like she wanted to have a wrestle like we always did when we were together when she was younger. I had missed her, very much in the last few weeks.
I started to run beside her knowing as well as she did where the pack seemed to lurk during the cooler mornings. They were all growing thick winter coats, for winter was only days away for everyone. There were animals on the move, some to warmer lands such as the birds, others into hibernation, which were the bears and things.
For me though there was nothing to do. I had no way of preparing for the winter like all the animals around me. Sure I would visit Frank and Jenny for a while but there was no point in that really. I was not a welcome person in the town. Because of that, there was no point in my going there or anywhere near the town. If other humans came into the woods they would not be alone for long before I found them.
They had tales of a viscous man-wolf or werewolf as the creature was known. It had not been seen for a long time though and it was said to live in these woods. I doubted that greatly as there was no such creature here. I was the only human who ran with wolves.
So winter came rushing along towards us and even as the first flakes of snow drifted in towards us through the sky and I moved towards the other wolves for warm, I stopped, feeling the oddest sensation in my mind. I growled as the muscles in my legs locked and I stopped where I was.
A snarling sound seemed to fill my ears and I realised it was me that made the noise. I sounded more like a wolf than anything else. Heat rushed through my body, racing through my veins. It was not a pleasant feeling right now.
I started at my hands in surprise as they started to change shape and long black fur seemed to grow from them really quickly. They looked almost wolf like. What the hell was going on with my body at the moment? Then all of a sudden my whole upper body lowered itself to the ground without my wanting it to. I had no idea what was going on right now and it frightened me.
Then the big alpha male of the male came striding towards me, his hackles raised for a moment. There was not a chance i would pick a fight with him, I was only slightly smaller than him. I stood completely still as he walked around me, sniffing at me curiously.
I meant no threat to him or the rest of the pack. I was sure that he recognised me, but I knew he would not be sure what to make of me at the moment. I was a wolf now and that was completely unexpected.
I just had to let him decide what to do about this I was one of the lower members of the pack. He seemed to accept me into the pack and I ran with the others back to where our home was. It even seemed appropriate to me now, that I was one of them.
I ran through the woods beside the older members of the pack. We were hunting and I already hunted the same as any of them. There was definitely a thrill to the hunt and I enjoyed it. The deer were so helpless against us.
As soon as we saw the herd we split into groups, I raced with three of the others around to where the other end of the herd was. As the others burst into the clearing, I leapt towards the massive buck that had lowered its head at them.
I was the one who always took the buck out, I was stronger even than the Alpah, despite my smaller size. My teeth and claws tore at him, I did not want to let him get away. The buck fought back, but not one of the blows he landed hurt.
With one last leap I had sank my fangs into his neck, crushing his spine. The rest of the herd was in complete mayhem as my family brought one down each. There were hundreds in the group, but by now, at least thirty of them had been culled. There were thirty of us in the pack, no pups at the moment.
The heard rushed off as we stopped to eat. Once I knew, this had been something repulsive to me, but now this was only something we did to survive. I ate for a while before noticing one of the youngest wolves had not managed to bring a deer down. I sighed and looked at him. Then I nodded my head telling him to come and eat.
I did not like seeing any of my family going hungry. There was enough meat here for him to be able to eat as well. Plus I was almost full as it were. I backed away after I had had enough and went to drink from the nearby river. The alpha was there as well, as were a few older females. As had always been the way, none of them minded my presences as I drank.
Then I caught the scent on the wind. It came suddenly and from not far away from the other side of the river. Human. They had horses and I could smell gun power. I growled, snarling at the danger. This would not do at all when it was the young ones first real hunt.
With my eyes I tried to tell the alpha to get the pack the hell out of here. That I would deal with the humans as I had time and time before. He sighed and howled. Then he ran back towards the rest of the pack, and I knew he would make sure they were safe before coming to find me.
“Wolves ahead!” shouted one of the men. I growled, swimming across the river and loping forwards into the bush to stop right in front of them. My teeth were bared, they had no idea that the wolf in front of them was actually a werewolf.
"Turn away humans, before someone gets hurt!” I snarled, the words coming from my maw were human in sound. The humans glared at me. I knew that for a long enough time I would be able to hold them back from going after the pack.
"Did you hear something?” asked one of them. I snarled as I recognised the tone in his voice. He was mocking me, so it was clear he knew who was under the wolf pelt.
"Nope. It thinks it can talk,” jeered the other. Both of them laughed. That was too much for me. Never again would they laugh at me. I leapt causing them to pull the horses out of the way quickly.
I spun around advancing again on them. I knew that they were seasoned hunters and that I had to be on my guard here. But they had not seen the werewolf in a long time. I hoped the pack was well away from here.
There was no chance I could stall the humans for long, there was no chance at all. They were the ones who were used to the attacks of the wolf. My body seemed to change in reaction to this knowledge, making me become more human in stance, but still have the body of the wolf.
“I said turn away!” Now I towered over the two men's horses and with one slash of my long clawed hand I knew I could kill the horses. Not that I did. I heard the fire of a bullet and leapt out of the way. “Too slow!” I growled. No one caught me off guard there.
Then someone fired their gun and I felt something slam into my shoulder. I howled in agony at the pain of it and seeing who that man was, I leapt at him, using my back legs to propel me at him and I raised one hand slashing at his horse as I landed. It fell to the ground, slain by one hit.
The man shouted as he hit the ground. I was on top of him immediately. My claws raked at him, killing him completely. There was no mercy in me.
I heard one of the men shouting. “No one fire their gun at her. We want the werewolf alive!”
I snarled. “You want to capture me? I will die before that is possible. And I will mark one of you as the next werewolf.”
Another bullet hit me and I howled again, not seeing the man who was responsible as my head turned swiftly from man to man, trying to locate who it as. Not finding him, I loped into the bush in the opposite direction to the pack.
I heard the horses gallop after me. I needed my cave.
I leapt over trees hearing the hounds behind me as they fell behind following my trail, it was not as well hidden as it used to be. My strength was weakening and I knew that this would be the last time I ran wolf.
Every movement I made was painful, as was every breathe. I sighed as I slipped into the cave. There was one wolf waiting there for me, it was my pack mother. She took one look at me and came running over to help me. My breathing was heavy, I never got winded before but this time I had been.
She licked at the places I was hurt as my body moved back to its regular wolf form. “Go!” I said when she finished. “Leave me. If this is how I die then I would rather you not be here.”
I heard the hard hoof on rock and she ran for it quickly. Raising myself onto all found legs I snarled as the two humans entered the cave after calling their hounds off. Wolves never run when their cornered, we fought.
“You cant be thinking to fight us, can you?” one of the men laughed.
I leapt at him, knocking him to the ground and biting into his neck. That done I knew that he would not die. He would be the new wolf.
I turned to face the other and leapt. This time though he raised his gun and fired. I fell to the ground, feeling my fur receding into the human I was really as the bullet pierced my heart. The man smirked. “Stupid mutt.” he turned and left.
My breathing cut off and I knew that this was it. As he called his dogs off I closed my eyes, dead.
The sky was lit up into thousands of different rays of colour as the sun came up over the horizon. Looking out at it, I knew that there was no sight more beautiful in the whole world. For me though there was no person to share it with who cared.
