Name: Abtenauer Species: Horse Colours: Although black is the most common color, all colors are recognized except Leopard Spotting. Height: 14.3-15.2hh Basic History: The Abtenauer horse comes from Austria, but its name is German. It is a rare draft breed, and it was bred to be similar in build to the Norkier. They are bred in the Abtenau Valley, which is located just south of Salzburg, Austria. People keep the mares and foals in high mountain pastures, and the owners feed them salt once a week to keep them from becoming wild. In the summer, they are left to roam meadows with cattle. Habitat: These horses have great agility and balance. They are built with strong legs, and they are very strong small horses. Therefore, they are suited perfectly for life in the mountains and forests. Quick Facts: Abtenauers are very calm and gentle minded. They are a bit finer boned than the Norikers, which they look like. The foals are born with odd curly hair that sheds out when they lose their baby hair. In riding, they are mostly used as pleasure horses and for agriculture. Link to more info: www.theequinest.com/breeds/abtenauer/Picture:
