Name: American Quarter Horse Species: Horse Colours: All Colors Height: 14-16hh Basic History: To begin the breed, the conquistadors crossed English Thoroughbreds with the Spanish Iberian bred horses. This created the colonial Quarter Horse. The result of the two breeds produced a hardy, tiny, and fast horse. They were used for sprinting and farm work. American Quarter Horses were also used during the westward expansion of the United States. They crossed with Nez Perce Mustangs to produce horses with cow sense, or the natural ability to work cattle. This made American Quarter Horses popular on cattle ranches. The American Quarter Horse Association was made in 1940 by some western horsemen that wanted to preserve the blood lines. Habitat: Quarter Horses are small and hardy, with good sprinting speed but not as good stamina. They would excel in forests, valleys, and mountains. Quick Facts: Some Quarter Horses were measured running 55mph. They got their names because they ran a quarter of a mile the best.
